I'm having some trouble finding some statistics but I found this:

30% of the US deaf population prefers ASL for communication
25% prefer lipreading
20% prefer written English

Some people may know how to read but be more comfortable with ASL

I think one of the reasons is because some people communicate through ASL primarily instead of English.

Using ASL you can cover both the people that are more proficient on ASL and people that are bilingual.
