25.01.2026 16:18 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0The podcast features special guest Brad Schwartz, whose book 'Broadcast Hysteria' has been on my Audible wishlist way too long and I'm finally going to get to it now... I'm pretty sure Zach of @ballyhoorevue.bsky.social recommended it to me back in Twitter days of yore.
25.01.2026 12:01 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0This is a fantastic listen! An in-depth look at (and recreation of) the first known "radio scare", courtesy of the 1920s BBC. And my goodness, the stunt was so *very* British...
25.01.2026 11:54 — 👍 3 🔁 1 💬 2 📌 0I second this - and the personal stats (e.g. which actor or director have you been seen most of this year/all time) are fun!

When the clock strikes midnight on January 1, creative works from 1930 & sound recordings from 1925 will enter the public domain in the US, like:
💄 Dizzy Dishes, first Betty Boop cartoon
🕵️♀️ First 4 Nancy Drew novels
🚂 The Little Engine That Could
🎩 Morocco
🍑 Georgia on My Mind
and many more!

This 100%... and just to add, it works if you live alone too. 🤩

05.12.2025 12:37 — 👍 88 🔁 18 💬 6 📌 0I'll be so sad when this technology, along with the magic of linear TV in general (as I still discover so many movies at random and hit record) is fully replaced with a multitude of streaming apps, which is a better experience apparently.
20.11.2025 10:11 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I've found that one of the best ways to see as many classic movies as possible (along with physical media when I can afford it) is keeping an eye on the TV schedules each week. I have 2TB Freesat recorder containing over 300 of films of my own choosing, which doesn't rely on my Internet connection.

When talkies took over, silent movies were instantly out of style. (Well, over the course of 2-3 years, almost instantly)
Studios quickly remade their silent hits, silent films were recut for dubious comedy. Talkie stars denied ever being in them.
I loved it! I cheered at Blue Washington! I swooned at Jacqueline Logan! And how on earth did Richard Arlen manage to look like a teddy boy in the mid-1920s?? In fact, the hairstyles of that crew seemed to span the whole second half of the 20th century...
09.10.2025 16:31 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Thanks to the #Pordenone Silent Film Festival's 2025 online output, last night I was able to see what @moviessilently.bsky.social was raving about in her review of The Blood Ship. It's marvellous! And a great 1st opportunity for many silent film fans as I think the 2024 Bluray is Region A only.

This is why I am so fussy about silent film restorations, computer colorization and AI.
It took us DECADES to degunk CALIGARI because some mid-century fool changed the aspect ratio.
You never know what is going to survive.
Mary Astor with short wavy hair, frowning slightly and playing a nurse.
It was also the first time I had seen Mary Astor in a silent film that wasn't a period drama. I can't stop thinking about how ridiculously young and beautiful she is.

Oh, Doctor! (1925) has given me my new favourite intertitle. (The context being a very cute scene between Reg Denny and Mary Astor) #100yearoldfilms #silentfilm
