Literally all I tried to do is running my script that works perfectly on FreeBSD from the early 2010s, this time on modern Debian Linux appliance.

Both are libre UNIX-likes and yet somehow this process management I've crafted means completely different things between them.

Linux process management kicked my ass today. I have no clue how to stop a job within a script along with gracefully terminating everything going on inside the job.
