the culture of academia is one that is immensely unforgiving for anything that impacts productivity, i.e, disability, care-taking, etc. if you want true involvement from those with lived experiences in academia, the culture must broadly change.

there is ongoing discussion in professional societies about how to involve people with lived experiences, but how many have been pushed out by unaccommodating systems in academia?
i have both professional and personal expertise in my field, but i have only felt valued for the professional.

it does work! in summer 2020, my mayor said he'd let the state patrol pepper spray protestors "for their own good" and i called less than 45 min later to tell him that inflicting pain is not ever "for someone's own good" and he apologized publicly that same day for that remark.

this article is from June 2020, but i would suggest to my fellow pain researchers that this is something we can meaningfully affect: both tear gas and pepper spray are designed, fundamentally, to inflict pain, and we can speak against their use

At the end of the day, the Black Lives Matter era was about whether people should be killed in the street, and lots of people decided yeah and put those little blue flags on their cars. It spread to everyone because it stopped for no one.
