Other Metroid games also had sequence breaks, but they did not need those sequence breaks to feel non-linear, that non-linearity was baked into the base game. Dread does not have that. And I say that as someone who likes Dread, it is literally just not the same type of game.

Do you think it's better or worse that Prime 4 is trying stuff completely new to the series rather than retreading old ground? I don't know how to feel about it myself, part of me thinks it's good to try new things, but another part of me is like "Why would I play a Metroid that isn't Metroid?"

For me that super resonant game is Prime 1, and to a lesser degree Prime 2. But once you get to Prime 3 I kinda stop vibing with it, so that's basically where my conception of Metroid's identity is stuck at.

I think that Metroid as a series has always been very reliant on whatever its most recent game is to shape its identity, so naturally that identity is going to shift over time, but it unfortunately means that only ONE game and maybe the game right before and/or right after it will resonate with you.
