Japan's "Mundane Halloween" costume contest is back!

Each year website DailyPortalZ holds a contest where people dress up as something super duper ordinary.

Here's a thread of some of my favorites from the 2025 contest!

I had the honor of being asked to join @matrices.bsky.social and @dekawolf.bsky.social for Spookality. Deka had the idea of a creature that rides the tv signals and jumps out of your TV. Deka did the vision, TV and animated shaders, I modeled/rigged, Matrices did the Unity insanity.

Signal Beast sits atop a stack of televisions with static dripping behind it. The Signal Beast is a lizardlike avatar for vrchat that has television static across its body texture, glowing claws, teeth, and eyes, and tv-antenna like antennae.

Signal Beast peeks out of a big static column giving a peace sign but with a slightly narrowed eye expression.

Signal Beast admires the dust on the TV and takes on a dusty static appearance.

Camoflauged in the static textures the Signal Beast sits atop a stack of TVs in the vrchat homeworld. #vrchat #vrc #vr #avatar

Our Signal Beast won the Spookality Avatar Jam! My team of @matrices.bsky.social , @scrunklestheminer.bsky.social , and I worked hard for weeks to make it from scratch. Here is the first concept sketch of the avatar, and some fun photos during testing.

Signal Beast inhabiting a tv with some spikes down his neck. The facial structure was lizardlike and so we were deciding the facial profile in the lower half of the image. Image is dated Sept 27.

A very generic ref sheet sort of thing. Just getting the bodyplan down for the main character. Some notes on body plan, head, tail, and number of digits.

The creature taking shape looking more menacing and having antennae now. These are pencil sketches and are a little less detailed but still show off the character.

Another image dated Oct 1 with three Signal Beasts shown, it is in a TV cabinet reaching out, and having small antennae as well as an open mouth with tongue out.

A normal looking shack, lit by lantern light and string lights, but the cartoon coyote standing in it is tilted for some reason.

A coyote hanging from the ceiling, but the creature is not horizon adjusted. This is part of the optical illusion of the vrchat world destination.

Went out on a nice bike ride today! I put one of my stickers over a scammy looking ad here when I visited last year. More creatures have popped up around it now!

This is how you do it.

It's like a very concentrated raspberry flavor mixed with lemonade. It's probably the best tasting berry I've ever had.

We went frolicking in the woods to pick wild berries, then made pancakes with them! These are Trailing Blackberries, Salmonberries, and Thimbleberries. The Thimbleberries were extra delicious!

Yeah, it has a bug net base layer for when the weather is nice, and a normal tent layer that can go on over top of that one.
