I would love to regain that joy at having a vagina that I once had - the reality which existed for a few weeks that despite the red flags, the malpractice and the death threat it had all gone right - but any chance of that died with my mental breakdown from the abuse four weeks after surgery.

I realized this morning that I've spent a decade on a fool's errand. A goal was to find the happiness with having had vaginoplasty that I felt in the initial days after surgery.

That's impossible because that joy is irrevocably corrupted by the domestic violence that occurred in response to it.

My separation from my first wife and subsequent divorce began at the end of 2016 so my available time for anything political was sharply reduced; I focused on my work as part of a group who got more doctors, nurses and therapists in the Triangle trained on Informed Consent access for trans people.

A bit of an odd footnote for myself: I was added to an interesting donor list by Cooper's campaign, which meant I was receiving engraved invitations to the inauguration festivities (canceled due to weather) multiple and several hundred dollar per plate fundraiser dinners at private residences.

As David says: the 2017 "repeal" (as even Cooper claimed it to be) was very much not, rather it left most of the law in place.

The Raleigh one happened in the summer of 2015 at which time the Republicans at that point threatened to do what became HB2 after Charlotte later passed their non-discrimination ordinance.

I was associated with other trans people who were part of local activism which they undertook because they realized ENC would not. Trans-inclusive nondiscrimination ordinances passed in multiple towns, including Durham and Raleigh, through 2015 due to their work.

That policy change remained there and ENC proceeded to declare Cooper as "The state's greatest LGBT Ally" honoring him their next gala because of his public statements against DOMA which would pass in the 2012 primary election, in 2014 covered by the 4th Circuit's ruling on Virginia's DOMA.

The AG at the time was Roy Cooper. Multiple members of the by then disbanded ENC task force met with him about clearing this particular barrier without success. I knew several of the members: one was my therapist at the time and a few others were in the UNC-Greensboro trans voice class with me.

One of the actions part of that halt was a DMV policy change which would remove the requirement of bottom surgery in order to update driver's licenses. The effort was nearly complete, actually going into effect for one day until it was put on suspension pending legal review by the AG's office.

With the 2010 general election, which meant Republicans had both houses of the state legislature and immediately promised to pass a "Defense of Marriage Amendment" to the state constitution, ENC went all marriage all the time through June of 2015. All other LGBT rights work immediately halted.

Equality NC seemed to view it as a PR and fundraising opportunity but had little interest in any more focus on the matter. Because of events at the start of the decade, I knew now former NC Governor Roy Cooper would only support so far as he saw it as useful to his campaign and ENC was all in on him

I lived in Durham or Raleigh from 08 to 18 and not only had a front row seat to all of it but had some involvement in the activism. It was frustrating how much people refused to believe how bad it was.

It's not just Germany. Imposed identification as a member of an identity group classed as both lesser and a security threat is a strong predictor of genocide internationally. See Rwanda.

There are not many knowns in the social sciences, but we KNOW this one.

Because many (most) trans people in Kansas aren't going to move, please also look for ways to support those staying and fighting the current regime there.

Sadly when a draconian anti-trans measure hits in a "red state," wider support pushes tend to forget those who aren't leaving.

I am in a GOOD position to move just locally and it still cost me nearly $5000, scans of a valid ID, tons of financial paperwork, etc.

It is not that easy, especially if you are a member of a marginalized group the state wants dead.
