Even Macron has now said that the attacks on Iran were "conducted outside the bounds of international law". And still, the Irish government cannot bring itself to acknowledge this reality. Cowards who are morally compromised by their subservience to the US. Shameful.

"Liberating women" by bombing a girls' school and a maternity hospital. Iranian women deserved better than both the Islamic Republic's tyranny and this war of aggression.

Our doctoral researchers Ben Casey and Brian Farrell did a great job organising the event, supported by other researchers in the department and by the society's dedicated committee of volunteers. Special shout out to @sarahannebuckley.bsky.social who has given so much to the IHSA over the years.

Had the real pleasure of attending and speaking at the Irish History Students' Association Conference this weekend and it was such a wonderful event. Cutting edge research from undergrads, MA students and doctoral researchers, all in an atmosphere of mutual support. Everything a conference should be

This is the death toll in Iran that some are calling "low." It's only been 3 days & over 700 ppl at least have been killed. Nearly 700 more deaths are being reviewed. That's 1400 deaths in 3 days. Israeli carnage in Palestine has fully shifted the Overton window for folks x.com/AdHaque110/s...

Cyprus would not be under attack if the British hadn't imposed the continued occupation of 3% of the island for sovereign military bases. This is not, as some are framing it, an attack on the European Union, but rather an attack on a 🇬🇧 colonial outpost used by 🇺🇸. This is not to say it's legal.

Do the Irish government know if and how Shannon Airport is implicated in facilitating operations that breach the UN Charter? Will they take steps to ensure that we are not complicit in this illegal war?

A society built on exploitation and repression. Openly fuelling genocide in Sudan and complicit in the genocide in Palestine. I don't wish any harm on people in UAE, and it is migrant workers from the Global South are most at risk of death from missiles, but spare us the pity party for the expats.

It's actually sad in a way to see how they can't help but turn everything into this grim grifting that strips out empathy and humanity from lived experience.

Have just seen an Irish "mindset influencer" in Dubai talking about how seeing the missiles underlined how life is short so people need to follow their dreams and break with the daily grind like she did by moving to Dubai. These people's brains have been fried by grifting...

And of course the tragedy is that those most vulnerable in Gulf societies are migrant workers from Global South countries whose explored labour is vital to sustaining "expat" comfort, security and luxury. Three migrant workers from the Indian subcontinent have been killed in UAE by Iranian attacks.

Add Thomas Byrne to the list. Particularly notable given how vocal he is in condemning russian acts of aggression. It looks like he is motivated by good old fashioned Atlantacism and not a universalist commitment to international law.

Weak and disappointing from Thomas Byrne, Minister for European Affairs on @rteradio1.bsky.social Morning Ireland.

Refused to condemn illegality of US/Israel attacks on Iran when asked.

Said the focus is on helping Irish citizens in the region.

That legal questions are a matter for the parties.

Why couldn't Helen McEntee or Micheál Martin say this? Are they too afraid of displeasing the multinationals? Are they worried about potential Irish legal complicity due to the use of Shannon? Their response has been shameful.

Asserting international law only when it is in your own/allies interest means not being committed to international law at all. Being dragged into a war by more powerful allies against direct interest and better judgement means having no strategic autonomy. The UK Govt is in a mess.

The older I get as a historian of empire, the more I recognize the truth in Hegel’s master-slave dialectic. The master is blind. They do not take the histories of the colonized seriously, whereas the colonized MUST know and understand the history of the master. We cannot afford not to.

Complicit cowards. Unwilling to critique American actions of aggression. Sickening stuff. No such hesitancy, and rightly so, when it comes to russian acts of imperialist aggression.

The idea that Israel wants a Middle Eastern Mandela is genuinely ludicrous. They have Marwan Barghouti locked in a dungeon.
