To speak of "the relative peace of the last eight decades" is to obscure imperial violence and to perpetuate the ungrievability of lives across whole swathes of the world. Where has this relative peace been for Algerians, Congolese, Vietnamese, Palestinians?

Can someone please explain this to me? When exactly was this 'era of historic peace' that Trump is supposedly ending...?

Beautiful morning in Maynooth for the Irish History Students' Association Conference. I seem to have brought the sun home with me! This was the first conference I ever did as a MA student. It was and remains such a friendly and supportive space for up and coming researchers.

So Israel is launching a "preventive" strike on Iran and also announcing a state of emergency, because they expect Iran to respond to their "preventive" strike by launching missiles. So like... what's being prevented here?

The phrase “preemptive strike” is as insulting as when we were sold “humanitarian pauses” in the middle of a live-streamed genocide. The powerful looking you straight in the face and telling you your common sense simply doesn’t matter.

True and I would not be shocked to see that same process of mainstreaming to follow in the UK...

Matt Goodwin fully on board the islamo-gauchiste bus. Just as the Irish far right pathetically apes the British far right, the self styled intellectuals of Britain's far right are just copy and pasting french far right discourse.

Someone needs to tell British media commentators that (a) many non Muslim voters care about Palestine (and I'm not talking only about students) and (b) it's perfectly fine for any elector, including Muslim voters, to be motivated to vote on the basis of foreign policy.

Nice to have some positive by election coverage to tide me over as I wait for a connecting flight in the early hours of the morning. The people of Manchester and of Britain deserved better than Matt Goodwin and his message of hatred. They also deserve better than what Labour are offering them.

Sad to be leaving Dakar today but looking forward to coming back in June for our workshop. It has been fantastic working in the archives, meeting brilliant colleagues and getting to know the city. Had a lovely last day visiting Raw Material Company, eating at Bidew and a selfie at the war memorial

The Kébé building in Central Dakar, built in 1973. A thing of beauty.

Indeed. We were obviously both triggered by the same podcast. That part in particular chimed with the insane transition in Harry and Meaghan's Netflix doc where he talks about learning about racism and colonialism and then moves swiftly to talk about his experiences (ie his heroism) in Afghanistan.

From my recent podcast listening it seems one thing that unites at least some British monarchists and republicans is their blindness to colonial violence. Not here for the Cromwell stanning....

First one to the archives for my last day of research in Dakar. I now have more than 250 pages of notes and a much deeper understanding of the Great(er) War and its legacies in West Africa. The Dakar archives are a fantastic resource with a very welcoming and helpful team of archivists.

Reading today about how at least according to colonial administrators, returning veterans from France inspired and organised a railway strike in rural guinea in 1920.

Contexts and consequences are radically different but some of the same logics at play in the housing crises in Dakar and Dublin, most notably the collapse of state construction www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoqK...

Visited the home of President Senghor and his wife Colette. Built 1975-78 in the 'soudano-sahélien style'. No pictures allowed inside but it is the very best of 70s interiors blended with African art. Most striking however were the images everywhere of their son Philippe who died at the age of 36.

Yes though he is effectively disowned by the centre right in France... The "centre right" is sadly better represented by Martine Vassal citing Petain in Marseille and Jean-Michel Aulas calling for a giant portrait of Quentin D to be erected on the town hall of Lyon. Both supported by Macron too...

Also worth mentioning that both candidates are supported by Emmanuel Macron's party...

In Marseille the candidate of the so called centre right echoing the Vichy France slogan while in Lyon their candidate is suggesting the Town Hall be bedecked with a giant image of the far right activist recently killed in the city. La France va très mal.
