Popped into my favorite local bookstore after doing an expensive errand, and they had Chandler’s “Campaigns of Napoleon” for only $60 but I just could not justify the indulgence today.

Maybe it’s an April thing.

Sometimes I think the hardest part of my job is answering "Can you give me three words for this thing?"

Ten words is easy. Three words is not a Monday morning job, I'm afraid.

Exceptional work. Anybody know what the fuck it’s supposed to mean?

He may appear fearsome and unyielding.

I am told that Smith's Falls has a great Burger King. So that could be the reason.

Not that air travel in winter is necessarily more reliable - I've had to sleep at Trudeau Airport more than once because storms nixed a connecting flight.

But sure beats sitting on a railway track in the cold, plus knowing that when I do board, it's 90 minutes more travel, not "who knows?" hours.

I used to love VIA - stress free travel through the corridor and even out east if I wanted to overnight it back to NB (which I did a lot as a grad student.)

But it is now too expensive for very unreliable service, especially in the winter and Canada has a lot of winter.

In Brazil this month, i have been asking a bit about their Jan 8th near coup, and folks say bad apples.

I wonder: is the apple picking machne badly programmed? Is the apple container place taking good apples and making them bad or is it really just a few bad apples?

This is a post about the CAF.

I have very vague memories of long gas lines in my childhood.

Also, a gas station running out of gas and closing early is a key clue in the 1973 Columbo episode “Candidate for Crime”.

This is an irresponsible, misleading post that misrepresents what Leavitt said. There's enough awful stuff happening. Don't confuse people.

Last night, I had the best sleep I’ve had in months, so I almost don’t care that I lost an hour.

Still, would be great if Europe and the Americas could sync up on the time change, because the next couple of weeks are going to be rough as my mental math goes screwy.

Hate to put a good lady down, but Lucilla didn’t say this. It was her father, Marcus Aurelius, in his Meditations (10.16). She really didn’t factor into this Stoic work. Even if I’d love more female writings from antiquity, we can’t misattribute quotes. lexundria.com/m_aur_med/10...

I've been listening to an audiobook about airships (zeppelins, dirigibles, or blimps, depending on locale), and how they NEVER really worked, but governments had invested so much in them that they were determined to MAKE them work, wasting fortunes & years & lives

This post is not about airships

I got distracted by shinier things before I was halfway through Amanat’s book, but I can also recommend it as a good, readable history.

Having similarly dealt with far-right characters I’ve reported on engage in stalking / harassing behaviour to the point where lawyers needed to be engaged, I can say Canada’s laws are completely insufficient to deal with these problems and I have zero trust in the legal system to protect journalists

was communicated to me by (the Rev'd) Mrs McMurray of C. W. Dumbar

The following love story of an Odjibway girl ^ it is founded on a historical incident in the ward of Canada. In 1759
Baigwaineoshee, (the White Eagle driven by the wind,) accompanied
as far as the lake of Two Mountains, a party of her tribe,
who descended the Utawas to aid Gen Montcalm in
the defense of Quebec. While there, she received attentions
from a young Algonquin, who, however, never fully declared
himself. The attachment was mutual, and continued
after her return to the south, where she continued to
pour out her affections in these strains, which she
composed to an Indian chant and often repeated. A
grand niece of hers, thus heard the song, and by [?] frequent re-
petition learned it. The term Odishquagumee, meaning a man at the lake of two mountains, or as it [?] literally ? at the end of the chain of water, is the Ojibwe term for an Algonquin.

Ia indenaindum - ia indenaindum!

[Ah me - ah me! when I think of him - when I bring
him to mind, my sweetheart, Odishquagumee, or
the Algonquin]

[As I embarked he put the white wampum around
my neck, my sweet heart, Odishquagumee]

Keguh wejeewin aindah nuk ke yun

[I ^ shall go with you, he said, to your native country - I will go
with you, ^ he said, my sweet heart -
Odishquagumee.]

!!! Just found this transcription and translation of a love song by an Ojibwe woman who fell in love with an Algonquin man while traveling near Deux-Montagnes, QC in 1759 during the 7 Years War. I can't quite interpret her name, it looks like Baigwaineoshee "The White Eagle Driven by the Wind"
