In a series of two stories, we spotlight a slew of systematic inequalities in sentencing–given the gender of the defendant, the age of the judge. Speaking with experts, we try to understand the cracks of justice we expose in the world’s leading legal system bsky.app/profile/lhre...

This disparity in wealth translates to a disparity in freedom. Frank is sent to prison, Jakob is not.

We look at the almost identical cases of Jakob and Frank. They were both convicted for intoxicated driving, under similar circumstances. But their financial circumstances are worlds apart– Jakob is sitting on millions of assets while Frank is sitting on a pile of debt.

Inequality Before the Law
Investigating bias in the world’s most vaunted criminal justice system.
In the world’s model justice system, we discovered striking patterns of discrimination. Who you are–and who you’re judged by–can determine how you are sentenced.

How we investigated sentencing bias in Norway’s criminal justice system
Norway’s criminal justice system is regularly hailed as a model — but is it truly impartial?
Accessing verdicts and data for rigorous investigative reporting is hard to do in Europe. But in a new @lhreports.bsky.social investigation w/ NRK we built a database with 1000s of verdicts & conducted a rigorous analysis, providing a rare look inside www.lighthousereports.com/methodology/...

Norway’s criminal justice system has often received high praise for its equity and fairness; it has rarely been under scrutiny in data-driven criminal justice journalism.

How we investigated sentencing bias in Norway’s criminal justice system
Norway’s criminal justice system is regularly hailed as a model — but is it truly impartial?
The crimes you’re convicted of should determine your punishment, not who you are. But even in Norway – one of the “fairest” criminal justice systems – @lhreports.bsky.social & NRK reveal that there are disparities in sentence length by income and gender
