And even Gundam features tropes that you don't see as often in the western mech-focused scifi that leans more towards military fiction, such as the protagonist and main antagonist piloting unique one-off mechs that are at a substantially higher power level than the ones used by the mooks

It is not though? Battletech is about the Mech as a piece of military hardware and about the societies and (mainly military) history around it, while a lot of mecha anime essentially tell a superhero story with the mechs acting almost as characters in and of themselves
