The image from Chun has been rotated 180° to align with our modern understanding of these animals. Historically, they have been interpreted like medusa jellyfish, with the mouth down, but we know they encounter their environment oral end first.

One fun thing about working on #ctenophores (comb jellies) is that you get to see animals nobody has depicted for more than a century. I haven't found any images of Deiopea from the time between Chun's 1880 drawing and my 1990s photo. Even shallow SCUBA exploration can yield surprises 🌊🦑🧪

Although he did indeed likely misidentify some of these fish species, it's important to remember that in total, Beebe documented the existence of 87 species of fish. He contributed significantly to ichthyology.

However, about 5 of the fish Beebe documented have never been confirmed to exist. They have never been seen since. One fish that he documented in particular is thought to be a misidentified comb jelly, because they look very similar to the fish that Beebe documented. 2/

Fun Fact: One of William Beebe's "untouchable fish" was likely a comb jelly. In the 1930s, William Beebe went into the ocean in a bathysphere, essentially a very crude stationary submarine. While down in the ocean, he saw several species of fish that he documented. 1/
