Make no mistake, we are at a series of crossroads right now and it is essential that we be deliberative, hyper attuned to consequences, and systemic in our thinking.

We know these things deep down, but AI has the power to create convincing and seductive illusions.

It’s not real but if it’s real enough, will enough of us care enough to stop it?

And if we don’t, what does that mean for our minds, our health, our systems, our societies?

14.11.2025 17:57 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

AI does a good job of impersonating things that are fundamentally not possible, and humans are suckers for rejection of the impossible.

For instance, we cannot:

- talk to our past or future selves
- reanimate the dead
- read someone’s mind

But don’t we all, sometimes, wish to do these things?

Anyway happy Friday etc

Above all else, AI is an accelerant.

That makes it really important for us to look at the world around us right now and ask: do we want to keep doing this, but faster? If not, what are the necessary interruptions?

14.11.2025 17:48 β€” πŸ‘ 7    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 1

AI itself isn’t the problem.

The problem is the stuffing of AI into every facet of our lives, the indiscriminate wielding of it against messy human problems, the band-aiding over inherent and sometimes unsolvable complexity - and all of this with a distinct lack of interrogation into consequences.

For some context, I’ve been working through complex tensions at work this week (between opposing concerns, priorities and ideas - not people, thankfully). It made me think back to this piece I wrote a couple of years ago.

Tension: Reflections from Leading Design conference 2022 Some notes on creating positive tension, and my reflections from Leading Design Conference 2022

β€œTension is just what occurs in the space between opposing forces.

Tension can create balance, or it can create stuckness. It can cultivate creativity and innovation, or it can lead us into dead ends. It can energise and invigorate, or it can cause exhaustion.”

Weirdly, I get this a lot when I’m having an OCD flare up. My most common one is a random line from Toploader’s Dancing in the Moonlight

An Instagram post from by rotation titled β€œwe’re sorry”. The post opens β€œTo our community, we’re sorry, we don’t believe in consumerism. We should probably apologise for thinking you don’t need to buy a new outfit for every festive party, black-tie event, or even during the Black Friday sales.” The post continues its disingenuous apology, finishing with β€œWe hope you can forgive us for saving your wallet and the planet one rental at a time.”

An Instagram post from ADP List titled β€œOfficial apology statement”. It opens β€œDear members, we owe you an apology. It seems we’ve made meeting amazing mentors a little too easy”. The post continues in this smug vein, layering its false apology with more not-so-humble brags.

Do I know anyone who’s looking to hire a policy researcher / research manager? A friend of mine is looking - she’s super smart, she’s worked on some significant projects for the British Red Cross, Ada Lovelace and Which?. Open to perm and contract roles. Please share for reach ☺️

Design for Real Life

I’m really looking forward to a chance to listen to this episode. β€œDesign for real life” is a favourite book - I’ve bought dozens to give away, and now I don’t have to because Eric Meyer and Sara Wachter-Boettcher made it free to read:

We discuss why those of us working on design systems are so vulnerable to burning and how we can prevent it. We talk about the importance of living your values, advocating what’s right and β€” crucially β€” knowing when to walk away.

Tune into the final episode wherever you get your podcasts. ❀️
