And Iranians are not a monolith. People insisting “all Iranians want US interventionism” are not being truthful, nor are the people who say otherwise.

The US and Israel never do anything out of altruism and have both caused widespread destruction and suffering throughout the Middle East. Iranians have the right to celebrate the death of Khomeini but that doesn’t mean that further interventionism is warranted or that this will end well -

Iranians being slaughtered by the regime is horrific. Iranian civilians being bombed by the US and Israel is horrific. It’s hard to resist and take back control of your society when an imperialist third party has intervened and is now killing the people who have the ability to implement change -

Iran deserves nuance and the ability to hold multiple truths. The regime was an authoritarian terror machine that committed atrocities against its own people for decades. Authoritarians must fall, but the only sustainable regime change must come from the people themselves. And not under US bombs -

Ice hockey has always been a soft (and often not so soft) power tool. It has been an extension of the state for both the Soviet Union and modern-day Russia.

And I find it interesting that a helmet displaying deceased athletes causes an uproar and disqualification, but a hack journalist roaming around the Olympics with a mask of this guy is apparently a non-issue. According to Czech media, the journalist has received a "warning."

There are a few KHL players on the Slovak team, which is a controversial topic. So by asking Slafkovský about his teammate who plays in the KHL (Ružička), this journalist was intentionally trying to be provocative and create a narrative.

There's always something condescending and particularly disrespectful when someone tries to speak Russian with Czechs or Slovaks. This language had no historical or natural usage here and was only imposed in schools and public life in the 20th century due to invasion and subjugation.

To be clear, I don't think there's anything wrong with speaking Russian as a communication tool (of course depending on context and power dynamics). Plenty use it who aren't Russian and I don't want to get into a linguistic purity debate or discuss myths about "suppressed Russian speakers." But -

There is unfortunately a pub in Prague (in "Malý Berlín") with this particular Olympic poster on the wall. Which feels extra poignant and disgusting considering it's around the corner from apartment building that was forced to house Nazi officials (at the corner of Bubenská and Veletržní in Praha 7)

and I'm quite honestly tired of hearing "well it's not REAL competition without the Russians." Really? The team who did not get a single medal when competing under its own flag in the last three Olympic ice hockey tournaments? okay.
