A very happy 30th anniversary to “Real Love” by The Beatles.

This was the second of the “new” Beatles songs released during the Britpop era.

Decent set of b-sides too!

Who bought a copy?

30 years ago today The Auteurs released the album “After Murder Park”.

Here’s Luke Haines giving a track by track guide to the Melody Maker.

They were seen as being old fashioned and not cool. Daft when you think how popular they were at the time.

As a rule the Melody Maker wouldn’t cover Ocean Colour Scene (and they rarely covered Paul Weller either). But this article about them from 30 years ago was one of the rare times they broke that rule.

The late Dave Jennings (re)introduces OCS to the world…

I definitely preferred the debut I must admit.

It’s always hard to pinpoint exact release dates for compilation albums.

But, I think “Shine 4” was released 30 years ago today.

What’s the best track from it?

I’m going with “Sandstorm” by Cast, but it’s a very strong selection, maybe the best Shine album?

On this day 30 years ago Lush released my favourite of their singles; “Ladykillers”.

Who else thinks this is their best single? If you disagree which would you choose?

Happy 30th anniversary to “Going Out” by Supergrass.

Nick and Candida of Pulp gave it a joint single of the week award when they did the NME’s single reviews.

Who went to the gigs on the advert?

Happy 30th anniversary to “Hometown Unicorn” by Super Furry Animals. Single of the week (joint) as chosen by Nick and Candida from Pulp.

Probably the only Britpop song about the Cergy-Pontoise Hoax!

Happy 30th anniversary to “Call Around” by Livingstone.

This was their debut single I believe.

And here’s an article about the band from the same week.

🚨Huge Britpop anniversary alert!🚨

Happy 30th birthday to “Don’t Look Back In Anger” by Oasis.

This number one hit single is still regularly heard on TV and radio to this day and my 13 year old son often sings it for no apparent reason!

Massive.

But what’s the best b-side?

30 years ago today Denim released the album “Denim On Ice”. A quirky and interesting album, maybe not to everyone’s tastes but worth investigating.

I saw Denim supporting Pulp the following month and was probably too young to really get it.

Happy 30th birthday to “Keep On Burning” by Edwyn Collins. Not as famous as “Girl Like You”, but I prefer this with its Northern Soul vibes and artwork.

Anyone else a fan?

I’ve not done a gig advert post in ages…

It’s a horrible wet afternoon here, so cheer yourselves up by perusing these two pages of great 1996 gigs.

Your task is to choose one gig from each page.

I’m going with Cast in London and Perfume at the 100 Club.

🚨Big Britpop Anniversary alert🚨

On this day 30 years ago The Bluetones released their debut album “Expecting To Fly”.

It famously knocked Oasis off the top of the album chart and is considered by many to be one of the finest British debut albums of all time.

Happy 30th anniversary to “Stereotypes” by Blur. Not a Blur single that gets much love, but I think it’s great.

Not sure there’s much point in filling in and sending off the advert now!
