This method is air-layering. In this technique, a section of bark on a branch is removed, rooting hormone is applied, and the area is wrapped with moist moss and plastic so it can produce roots. After the roots form, the branch is cut off and planted as a new plant. This method can also be used for fruit trees such as citrus, fig, pomegranate, cherry, and others. But trees propagated this way do not have a rootstock, so their vigor and resistance may be lower compared to grafted trees.

Opposite Hawksbill (where one is standing) there is the gap of the gorge and then a mountain with a rough rock horizontal stripe. The rocks are a vertical drop off which then resumes a gentler angle down into the gorge, with autumn colors of trees showing prominently. Beyond this mountain are rows of distant light blue mountains blending into a stormy looking overcast sky. The picture is dominated by the rough angled rock, autumn colors and moody sky.

There is a small clearing with tall evergreen trees at the far side with few branches. In the foreground are saplings between one and 1/2 feet to 3 feet tall with many evergreen branches and needles. In front of the large trunked trees is a remnant of a midsize tree, broken off and slightly angled back towards them. Moss also extends along the exposed roots of the trees. The sunlight comes through the trees and hits the large trunk trees, and several of the small saplings, one which looks like it is in a spotlight.

The picture shows an 80 foot tall waterfall. There is not much water on the day of the picture. The waterfall is gentle at the very top and then nearly vertical, falling to a pool and then into different streams of water before forming a creek. There is a large rock on the right sloping across so that you don’t see the pool at the bottom of the waterfall. Boulders are jumbled across the lower portion of the picture. A Rhododendron tree has dark green leaves in the upper corner of the picture providing a little bit of color to the mainly gray and brown of the rock and white of the water.

The majority of the picture is medium blue sky with a late afternoon sun shining toward the camera. A bare tree is backlit black and prominent toward the center of the picture with several smaller bare trees also in the picture. A more distant evergreen fir is also backlit black. Low in the picture through the trees is a long range view of distant mountain peaks, rolling blue in the distance. Because of the lighting, the blues of the picture are stunning, and the black silhouettes help emphasize the lighting effects.
