We have 20+ food pantries plus a food bank in our area and I can attest that every one of them originated and in most cases continues to operate through a church or group of churches. The lion's share of volunteers that staff them also come from churches.

I've been in the Alliance my whole life and never made the Abe Simpson connection! TBH if you showed me a picture of A.B. Simpson and asked me who it was I'd probably go with Rutherford B. Hayes.

We have had so many immigrant and refugee pastors come through our district licensing and ordination committee in the past year. 25-50% of our candidates at times. I am proud that the Alliance offers the resources to help make this happen.

Just a cautionary tale, we started our son on March Madness brackets at age 6 which was very cute, and he beat us that year and almost every year since then. 🙄

When my kids used to escalate an argument about something dumb I would tell them to let it go or i would belt out the song Let It Go and I am here to testify that it worked every single time.

Threatening punishment by song is the best because the punishment is therapeutic for you the parent.

The last 2 movies my 17yo went to see with his friends were Minecraft and Super Mario. Not sure if the boy has a real code of any kind.

Last week my little neighbor girls were handing out homemade cardboard "cookies" to the neighborhood. I had some flowers left over from an event so I gave them each one.

Hawaii was the only Michener novel I actually gave up on. Consider me a casualty of the planet formation era. I remember loving Chesapeake - I'd have to look through titles to remember others.

I bought a beat up copy of this at a used book store in college, and it sent my on a big James Michener kick. Centennial was my favorite, though. In some of them I would skip 50-100 pages while the dinosaurs were fossilizing.

It does require deep work and I suspect also relationships that help us surface and challenge those unrecognized beliefs.

For many of us I think meritocracy is deep down embedded in our gospel, in spite of all the places Jesus reveals that belief and challenges it in Scripture. (And is often met with anger when he does.) The elder brother, the unmerciful servants, the vineyard workers... even Judas Iscariot I think.

To be fair, Andrew Jackson's social media might have been pretty wild if it was around in the late 1820s/ early 1830s. There are probably a few others.

My son is late teens, smart but less driven than his older sis, and perhaps the world is less accommodating now of boys putting in the bare minimum and being rewarded, while achiever girls go after leadership, college etc. In my observation white boys are still doing ok if they try even a little.

My mom worked at an Alabama high school in 1970. Brown v BOE was in 1954 but the school did not integrate until late 60s due to Wallace's pushback. Most of the white families pulled their kids out and sent them to private school. I'd never know that this happened without her firsthand account.
