Eighteen Hundred Forty-Five in Retrospect I'm in a dream. I'm in the future, the 22nd century, and they've asked me-me! to write a history of the present day. What can I say? In 1845, we regarded war as right and proper. And when men fought, they ought to settle it with a duel. If a man insults you, it was expected you haul out and fight with pistols. Industry was real, and everywhere. The humbler classes affected worst. Some men spent so much of their earnings on liquor their families could hardly afford food. Reeling to and fro, they'd fall into gutters, beat their wives and tender ones. Some men realized enormous sums, unimaginable sums of wealth. Most of which was used to accumulate even more. On the other hand, vast numbers-chiefly in the cities-sunk into a degree of misery unknown in earlier, more barbarous times. The rich unprecedentedly rich, and the poor unprecedentedly poor. And yet in this age, full of ignorance and error, animated by one ruling spirit-the spirit of the self-they thought it a civilized age, looking back with pity upon simpler times. ICE raided a popular restaurant in a San Diego neighborhood. About 3 dozen agents, some in full tactical gear, arrested restaurant workers while patrons were enjoying dinner. The ICE agents didn't expect a resounding rejection by neighbors & patrons. The community spontaneously protested.
