i've decided that for the sake of feasibility i'm going to count authors who publicly identify themselves as members of a specific diaspora/immigrant community, so...
the weird thing about this is that it's all about human dignity and nobody points out that the real problem is that AI tends to hallucinate bullshit and you don't want your pope avatar telling people to go off and eat poisonous mushrooms or whatever. 1

sometimes you read a book where it's all about the plot. other times it's to let the language wash over you. this is the latter- a book where you just kinda got to let the words take you wherever they want and hang on
What are some trad pub SFF/H books that have been out at least a year that you think didn't get enough attention? Adult or YA. Marginalized authors preferred, and small press titles encouraged. Not looking for big bestsellers or award-sweepers.

I am trying all the notebooks over the course of the years, but recently got into fountain pens, so now that's a consideration for my paper choices.

I thoroughly agree with Rob's call to share our practice, especially as geographers for whom many find ourselves working geographically from outside of geography departments, myself included. Lots of food for thought. For now, here's what today's practice looks like (In addition to BlueSky babbling)

Sometimes the keyboard & screen are obstacles to writing; theyβre easy to use, but not to use well.
At those times, pen & paper often allow me to vault or sidestep those obstacles. Things flow, slowly.

When you publish a website that posts the names and photos of scholars who have written or said things you disagree with and encourage people to surveil and harass them, you are not, in fact, a βfree speechβ organization.

I have two professor colleagues who have faced threats and harassment due to the organization Charlie Kirk built, and they were not alone. We can denounce and loathe political violence without hagiography for its victims. This is dangerous nonsense.

We can condemn political violence without valorizing a destructive, hateful bigot.
This is the legacy of Charlie Kirkβs politics that is being celebrated as βa love of free debateβ or whatever.

NEW: We got access to Jeffrey Epsteinβs personal Yahoo inbox β more than 18,000 emails.
It shows Epsteinβs world in his own words: an unfiltered look at how his operation worked, who enabled it, and how Ghislaine Maxwell stayed at the center of it all.
Things I recommend instead of doomscrolling:
-reaching out to a trusted group chat
-cleaning your home
-eating ice cream
-playing with a pet
-reading a book
-donating to charity
-writing in a journal
-taking a hot shower
-watching a standup comedy special
-going to bed early
The Heritage Foundation released the following words from the organization's president, Kevin Roberts, about the death of Charlie Kirk: βHis martyrdom must be a turning point for our country.β
Yes, he said "martyrdom." Remember, we don't even know who killed the man or why.
No arrest. No known motive. And heβs saying this. How can we possibly trust that any investigation into Kirkβs death will be on the level. Theyβll make it fit the narrative. They have to after this. Unreal.
