"The working classes have always been the
caring classes — not just because they do
almost all of the caring labor, but also because,
perhaps partly as a result, they actually are
more empathetic than the rich. Psychological
studies show this, by the way. The richer you
are, the less competent you are at even
understanding other people’s feelings.
So trying to reimagine work — not as a value
or end in itself, but as the material extension
of caring — is a good start."

"I can't believe they let them make this movie" - in reference to some movie from 30+ years ago.
The reason they did it was because there were more studios. We had "mini majors." They needed to stand out somehow, so they took more weird chances.
This is one reason we need to break up the studios.

These are basic bitch answers, I know, but Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado About Nothing. They're hits for a reason.

Was it in the process of watching the movie? Because I cannot think of a more delightful experience than sitting down for a Batman movie, hearing an unexpected Prince song and then learning that there's MORE.

It feels like this and AI are part of a larger attempt to build an alternative system of expertise divorced from actual empiricism and analysis because those things come up with answers that make them mad

I think part of the issue is that it's a form that's not really tied to any specific medium or transmission method other than RSS feeds. So it doesn't feel like there's any real constraints on what a podcast can be. It's just a recording of people talking and that can be anything.

Obviously we live in a bankrupt era of lies masquerading as truth, but few places make that more obvious than the "Most Watched" section of any streaming service.
No Paramount+, everyone is not logging in to watch Evolution (2001) starring David Duchovny and Orlando Jones. That's not happening.

Screenshot: Tea with Tolkien:
thinking about how many characters in the Lord of the Rings ultimately succeed by simply plodding on despite a loss of hope. weighed down by despair and yet not fully drowned.
trudging towards the light with their last ounce of strength and will. and in the end, it is enough.
For all of us right now.

And I'd argue that, much like with the SW sequels, the second one is the only one that has any juice at all because it's made by a filmmaker and not a hack

i was talking to my mom about cardassians and said something along the lines of what must it be like to be a cardassian civilian. like abstractly knowing the rest of the galaxy thinks of your species as 'the evil ones' and kinda sorta knowing your government runs labor camps and torture prisons and is a military empire, and it's a huge deal for everyone else in the galaxy, but you just like run a restaurant so it's not a big part of your daily life, so you just like, go about your day and make soup and don't think about it' and then halfway through my sentence i actually heard myself and then had to go sit down for like ten minutes. like sat down in a chair and stared at the floor for ten minutes
whoops

This is the most I've been invested in the Oscars in nearly 20 years and that's largely because there's enough genuinely good and competitive nominees to make it interesting

The thing is, the movies that keep occurring to me are ones that wouldn't have been in the box office anyway because they came out on Netflix: Mitchells vs the Machines, The Old Guard, The Half of It
But obviously Turning Red and Luca, the only movies Pixar has put out since Coco that feel classic

It always annoyed me when people would characterize the prose of Lord of the Rings as something you have to get past in order to enjoy the story. The prose is the point!

If America was a country filled with people where the contents of the Epstein files could take down a president we wouldn’t be in this situation to begin with. He was elected AFTER access Hollywood, child separation, covid, being found liable for sexual abuse etc.

This is why I hate it when people unfairly/excessively trash red states. There are queer, trans, and under resourced people living in those places too and most of the time they can’t just uproot their lives

I really hate anti-trans politicians, and I especially hate it because it was a culture war issue where we were clearly winning and then a bunch of nominally liberal people at the Times and the Atlantic decided to reverse that and they did.

It's not just Germany. Imposed identification as a member of an identity group classed as both lesser and a security threat is a strong predictor of genocide internationally. See Rwanda.
There are not many knowns in the social sciences, but we KNOW this one.
Please, Americans, make it stop.
