1997 Red River flood in the United States - Wikipedia

This was my context for flooding at the time, so it took awhile to absorb the reason New Orleans was left to fend for itself and Grand Forks was given resources and support

I think the folks in power realized what they could get away with

05.03.2026 00:59 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah I was just starting to realize that all the stuff they did competently in Grand Forks in β€˜97 wasn’t offered to New Orleans and the reason was not just scale

05.03.2026 00:59 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Oh my god. I wish I had the fucking sense to pay attention at the time, but I wasn’t really living in the wider world yet, just going to college in a town that had experienced its own devastating flood a few years prior

05.03.2026 00:52 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

You can really see everybody in a position of power just abdicated all duty of care for the people of New Orleans before the hurricane even made landfall

Black folks really were always living in the reality the rest of us are waking up to now

Watching a documentary about Hurricane Katrina and I knew I wasn’t angry enough but I didn’t realize

This is just like our conservative D Senate candidate in IL making a point to say he opposes β€œTrump’s DHS”

Millennium Challenge 2002 - Wikipedia

reading about Iran depleting expensive missile defense systems with cheap drones and remembering the time America did war games and Marine Corps Lieutenant General Paul K. Van Riper was winning by using massed cheap attacks so they changed the rules to get the outcome they wanted

lol

I think I’d like to go back all the way, because I think Manifest Destiny is still rattling around in there somewhere

Mishu, but they just named him last week, so he’s not attached.

Americans’ pathological need to turn systemic failings into individual choices, then to boil all individual choices down to intent, ignoring impact

30 years ago Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club accurately predicted that men under late capitalism, empty consumers who had come to think of themselves as β€œthe middle children of history” with no great wars to fight, would eventually prank and shitpost their way into fascism.

Maybe it’s just Banana Wars all the way down

I guess the other question is whether post-9/11 is really a different flavor of β€œyes, blood for oil” than Gulf War I or our Cold War era fucking around. You can kind of read it as a sequel/β€œnow it’s personal” but maybe it’s all the same old empire

I grew up Lutheran so we focused a little more on the β€œlove thy neighbor” parts of the Bible than the end times shit of questionable provenance.

I remember reading Revelations and being super disappointed that it didn’t quite live up to the drama culture imbued it with.

This all still feels very post-9/11 to me, but I wonder if it is actually a different flavor of Hell. The evangelical eschatology angle is interesting, for one.

03.03.2026 14:31 β€” πŸ‘ 15    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

I dunno man it doesn’t even feel like we really wrapped up the last forever war in the Middle East before we helped Israel start a new one

Food names like Biscuit and Dumpling are also still on the table. He just feels unpretentious but dignified. An old soul and a ride or die.

Today I’m leaning toward giving him a classic dude name or nickname, like Gus, Fred, Goose, Moose, Skip, Rooster, Lefty, Woody, Bud, Mack, Duck…

Something that sounds like it could be a cowboy name or CB handle works too.

He talks to people, he loves to scream in the hallway to hear his own voice, he mostly hangs out adjacent but will try to stomp on my head at bedtime, he’s very good at disappearing for a large cat, he doesn’t play much yet but will attack a wand toy or kick toy. He’s quite the little sidekick.
