‘Made in Europe’ row brings back Brexit’s bitter memories British ministers are concerned that U.K. firms won’t be treated fairly under new European rules.

‘The French officials’ reasoning is simple: Since it left the EU single market, the U.K. should not enjoy the benefits that come with it, noted the officials…

‘“You can’t have the cake and eat it too,” one French official told POLITICO bluntly.’

Von der Leyen: “I understand very well that for you, a clear date is also important… The date you set is your benchmark that you want to match… from our side, dates by themselves are not possible.”

Iceland looks to fast-track vote on joining EU A referendum on resuming membership talks had been expected in 2027, but could come as early as this August.

"The conversation around deepening [EU] ties with Iceland and potentially even resuming accession negotiations began even before Trump returned to office last year... But escalating threats from the U.S., have increased the urgency."

Killer conclusion - "Unless the EU finds a better way to align its domestic political and institutional incentives in line with its external aims, its ambitions will continue to outrun its capacity to deliver."

Brussels pitches English-first approval to speed up EU trade deals Agreements with India and Indonesia would be test cases under a new “accelerated procedure” floated by the European Commission.

Oft overlooked procedural features of finalising agreements with the EU.

Worth noting for if/when UK and EU announce SPS and other ‘reset’ agreements later this year.

Speed with which TCA signed and provisionally applied very much the exception not the rule

A fast-tracked Ukraine EU accession by 2027? Here are three dilemmas The idea of a fast-tracked Ukraine accession to the EU, as early as 2027, is gaining ground in Brussels. But urgency must not come at the expense of principle. The greater risk today is not moving too...

"accelerated accession must not create second-class membership... fast-tracking Ukraine must not become a limited... fig-leaf enlargementa speedy enlargement process must go hand in hand with internal EU reform" - @jaemmanouilidis.bsky.social

There’s also a major procedural issue

Each accession treaty needs to be ‘submitted for ratification by all the contracting States in accordance with their respective constitutional requirements.’

Domestic parliamentary (at least) approval needed in all existing member and acceding states.
