I'll be at ESA this week and would love to catch up with any friends in Baltimore! I'll be presenting on Monday afternoon (tomorrow!) for any folks who are in town yet!

Such a fun project & massive team effort. We sampled tree cores my 1st yr of grad school then took a year to figure out how to grind woodโ€ฆ ! But we were amazed to find such a complex & unexpected ecosystem inside trees. And weโ€™ve just scratched the surface! We explored 150 treesโ€” 3 trillion to go!

Exactly how we felt! Sort of โ€œof course theyโ€™re in thereโ€, butโ€ฆ a trillion prokaryotes in each of three trillion treesโ€” thatโ€™s an astounding amount to explore!

So fun to be featured on this weekโ€™s @naturepodcast.bsky.social talking about the tree microbiome and could not be more thrilled to be following a story on rubber ducks.

Trump administration cuts to NSF will result in more than 200,000 FEWER people per year involved in basic science, training, and education - what should have been the next generation of US scientists. This isn't even eating your seed corn, it is setting your seed corn on fire and salting the earth.

Of all shapes and sizes: a theoretical framework for animalโ€mediated terrestrial heterogeneity across scales Animals redistribute elements throughout their lives by depositing wastes and carcasses. Growing evidence shows that these zoogeochemical processes enhance landscape diversity and heterogeneity world...

We often ask how does a species affect an ecosystem.
But what about all of themโ€”together?

Our new framework predicts how animals of all shapes and sizes act within their communities to influence elemental distribution on landscapes.

โ€œThis budget is a recipe for ending the US' leadership in science. It would do generational damage by forcing labs to shut down, with a corresponding loss of highly trained individuals and one-of-a-kind research materials.โ€

Aerosol cooling and methanogenesis suppression! A scalable-climate-solution twofer!! An additional 9 months per year should pass additionally testsโ€” sounds like an even better investment than bitcoin.
