#5debutalbums8589 Public Enemy - Yo! Bum Rush The Show (1987) Exciting and intoxicating but incredibly, even better was to come just 12 months later. All the elements are there but not quite fully formed and self-confident. #NowPlaying

#5debutalbums8589 Coldcut - What's That Noise (1989) Moving from remixers-for-hire to their own LP was a brave move that paid off. They must have hammered the Filofax to get collaborators such as Lisa Stansfield, Mark E.Smith & Junior Reid. Dated but you can hear the pre-tremours of acid house.

#5debutalbums8589 The Armoury Show - Waiting For The Floods (1985) I recently read the John McGeoch biography, so it's good to be reminded of this creative chapter in his short but stellar career. The Magazine/Skids supergroup never quite took off despite this promising start. #NowPlaying

#5debutalbums8589 Ciccone Youth - The Whitey Album (1989) Not a Sonic Youth LP but a collaborative experimental love letter to Madonna. Barely recognisable covers crowned by the dystopian karaoke of Into The Groove(y). A bracing listen but rewards repeated visits. #VinylCommunity

#5debutalbums8589 #albumoftheday The House Of Love - The House Of Love (1988) The bright and shiny pop of HoL filled a massive Smths sized gap in the indie landscape for a few years. And man alive were they good on stage. Stong contender for me. Best track - Love In A Car #VinylCommunity

#albumoftheday #5debutalbums8589 Beastie Boys - Licenced To Ill (1986) Intoxicating word play coupled with the meatiest classic rock riffs. Why had no-one done this before the Beastie Boys & Rick Rubin. A mighty and innovative rap record. Best track - No Sleep Till Brooklyn #VinylCommunity

#5debutalbums8589 N.W.A - Straight Outta Compton (1988) Seminal gangsta rap album. Its nihilistic and feral approach is genuinely frightening even decades on. This is a window into a world that most of us never experience. To be clear, Compton is not the delightful village in West Sussex #NowPlaying

#5debutalbums8589 Easterhouse - Contenders (1986) Easterhouse were certainly contenders in 86 off the back of single, Whistling In The Dark. Smiths like jangles with Mark Burgess/Pete Wylie like vocals. Great band with Rough Trade backing - why didn't it happen for them? #VinylCommunity

#5debutalbums8589 Pet Shop Boys - Please (1986) Very British dance pop. Tennant's off-hand vocals paint a picture of being alone in the cold, dark, unforgiving city. Great 80's production. Also, they mention the Finland Station, a sadly under-mentioned train terminus in pop music. Nailed on top five

#5debutalbums8589 Throwing Muses - Throwing Muses (1986) featuring the quavering tones of national treasure Tanya Donelly. A powerful debut of depth, emotion, and the occasional cathartic blast. I even spotted a bit of 3/4 time in there. #NowPlaying #VinylCommunity

#albumoftheday Lush - Scar (1989) sadly doesn't qualify for #5debutalbums8589 as its 6 tracks only stretch to 16 minutes. But what a way to spend a quarter of an hour. Dreamy noisy pop that is one of 4AD's hidden gems. Blink and its over. Best track - Etheriel #NowPlaying

#5debutalbums8589 De La Soul - 3 Feet High And Rising (1989) The kings of the Daisy age. Just lose the game show interludes, and this would be faultless. A positive counterbalance to Gangsta rap. New wave to Public Enemy's punk. Psychedelic subject matter as well, ranging from squirrels to dandruff.

#5debutalbums8589 #albumoftheday B-Movie - Forever Running (1985) I got this decades after the fact, but recall Peel playing their early singles. Another band that needed a hit single and a slice of good fortune to tip over into mainstream stardom. Best track - Remembrance Day #NowPlaying #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8589 Luxuria - Unanswerable Lust (1988) Post-Magazine Howard Devoto and excellent guitarist, Noko, combine on this spiky yet melodic post punk set. Howard's voice was never radio friendly, but this is dark and innovative alternative pop. Very underrated. #VinylCommunity #NowPlaying

#5debutalbums8589 Nirvana - Bleach (1989) Raw, sludgy and front loaded with the best songs, especially the Lennonesqe, About A Girl. The guitars are a little submerged in the mix, but for a recording cost of $600, this is an opening salvo of which they could be proud. #NowPlaying #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8589 The Stone Roses - S/T (1989) There are few things more intoxicating than a new band coming over as a gang (Clash/Oasis/early Smiths) and the Roses were in the right place with the right attitude to surf the zeitgeist. Hot take - Could do well - duh! #NowPlaying #VinylCommunity

#VinylCommunity The Police - Reggata De Blanc (1979) I recently upgraded my copy of this and wanted to give it a run out. Probably their best effort? It's certainly a polished improvement on their debut. The two hit singles, Message and Walking, set them up for global domination in the eighties.

#5debutalbums8589 James - Stutter (1986) Early outing for James that sounds live and rough edged. Jagged folk rock that avoids the twee moniker that was sometimes aimed in their direction. Johnny Yen is the stand-out track. I saw them gigging this album supporting The Smiths. #VinylCommunity
