This is a window into a world that most of us never experience. To be clear, Compton is not the delightful village in West Sussex #NowPlaying

#5debutalbums8589 Pet Shop Boys - Please (1986) Very British dance pop. Tennant's off-hand vocals paint a picture of being alone in the cold, dark, unforgiving city. Great 80's production. Also, they mention the Finland Station, a sadly under-mentioned train terminus in pop music. Nailed on top five

#5debutalbums8589 De La Soul - 3 Feet High And Rising (1989) The kings of the Daisy age. Just lose the game show interludes, and this would be faultless. A positive counterbalance to Gangsta rap. New wave to Public Enemy's punk. Psychedelic subject matter as well, ranging from squirrels to dandruff.

Another band that needed a hit single and a slice of good fortune to tip over into mainstream stardom. Best track - Remembrance Day #NowPlaying #MusicSky

#5debutalbums8589 Luxuria - Unanswerable Lust (1988) Post-Magazine Howard Devoto and excellent guitarist, Noko, combine on this spiky yet melodic post punk set. Howard's voice was never radio friendly, but this is dark and innovative alternative pop. Very underrated. #VinylCommunity #NowPlaying

#VinylCommunity The Police - Reggata De Blanc (1979) I recently upgraded my copy of this and wanted to give it a run out. Probably their best effort? It's certainly a polished improvement on their debut. The two hit singles, Message and Walking, set them up for global domination in the eighties.

#5debutalbums8589 James - Stutter (1986) Early outing for James that sounds live and rough edged. Jagged folk rock that avoids the twee moniker that was sometimes aimed in their direction. Johnny Yen is the stand-out track. I saw them gigging this album supporting The Smiths. #VinylCommunity
