Vilified, arrested, held incommunicado: that's the price of protest in Britain today | George Monbiot It seems to me that whatever the charges facing the activists at the Quaker meeting house raid, their fundamental crime is dissent, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Action to halt protest seems somewhat one sided.

Really looking forward to what the panel have to say at the @uniwinchester.bsky.social Education Question Time. I am very much looking forward to asking a question tonight #UoWEQT

Trump is creating a selfish, miserable world. Here’s what we can do | Michael Plant The president is both a symptom and a cause of unhappiness and mistrust. But we can respond by rebuilding our social fabric

A good read to lift your day.

Curriculum and Assessment Review publishes interim findings Becky Francis and review team publish their initial findings and set out the next phase of work which will focus on four key areas.

'The review expects to recommend a phased programme of work across the subjects listed in the national curriculum. This will allow reforms to be made incrementally in a way that does not destabilise the system.'
Part of me thinks some aspects might need to be destabilised.

The finale of #Wonderblocks series 1 is a musical episode celebrating all our Wonderblocks friends in a talent show. Episode 30 It's Wonderful What You Can Do.

It's #Wonderblocks week 6 & the final 5 episodes of series 1 have been released. This week is all about iteration. Again helps out Stop & Go making indefinite & definite loops. They get Toad's rail cart to the station, to grow a beanstalk, tinker with patterns to decorate a castle & make ice creams.

It seems unlikely that it will change the curriculum to me. Our curriculum seems to be dictated by the exam system which seems pretty much stuck in the 1890s. For decades I have wondered how much use it is to be able to memorise and regurgitate stuff. Surely there could be more about application.

Symposium highlights 'innovative' approach to improving children's mental health It featured presentations about the charity’s work, which aims to embed healthy, purposeful movement sessions into the primary school day.

Teaching till late, so missed the photo op with my brilliant & accomplished colleagues & friends. I spoke about the importance of critical digital literacy in an Artificially Intelligent world at this important conference organised by Dr Rhiannon Love.

Thanks @wearebcs.bsky.social and @juliaadamson.bsky.social for inviting me to the Barefoot 10th Birthday celebrations. Such a wonderful resource managed by an awesome team and delivered by passionate volunteers who go above and beyond.πŸ‘Happy birthday πŸŽ‚ #TeamCompSci #CASChat

Henry and his colleagues are doing amazing work in primary computing. We need children to be more digitally literate and to develop understanding of the potential uses of, benefits and limitations of AI. You might want to check this out.

I wonder if anyone from @computingatschool.bsky.social might have some suggestions. I have a huge pile of marking to address in the next few weeks but maybe something I can spend some time on after things get a bit quieter.

Perhaps a good place to start would be looking to see where episode themes can be drawn from and linked to NCCE plans and Barefoot resources. I am going to the Barefoot birthday party tomorrow in London so might discuss developing some kind of mapping document perhaps.

I love this programme, are there any educational resources/lesson plans to go with them? Thinking we could watch an episode and do some follow up activities after? Don’t want to reinvent the wheel if it already exists

Been really enjoying this with my children at home… can’t wait to plan to use it in EYFS/KS1 at school! #Wonderblocks is amazing!

In the EYFS, I would just watch the series with the children and start to try to use some of the language when they are solving problems in their child initiated play (e.g. Ah, yes that's tricky, let's stop and think about it).

18.02.2025 17:38 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

It is all very new at the moment. I would possibly look at how it can be woven into your existing KS1 computing planning e.g. when learning about algorithms in Y1 I would watch episode 15 and sing along with First Things First.

Europe’s population crisis: see how your country compares – visualised How anti-immigration politics across the EU clashes with demographic reality

Having lived in Japan that has been battling for some time with falling birthrates, low migration and an aging population, I think it might be wise for some of us in Europe to learn from their experience.

All teachers should be trained on special educational needs to help end 'postcode lottery', report says The Education Policy Institute (EPI) has found gaps in teacher training means many children who should be identified as having special educational needs and disabilities are being missed.

As a teacher educator, I frankly find it bewildering that this isn't already happening. Key foci threaded throughout our teacher education programmes are inclusion and child development. How can teachers be educated for such an important job without this.

This week episode 17 is called Woodland Wiggle @computingdawn.bsky.social. This would be a great one to encourage children to decompose a problem like making a dance in Scratch Jr. The song Sounds Like a Plan (e20) would reinforce this approach to computational thinking.

In line with the work of John Dewey, I believe that an experience is only truly educative if it leaves the learner open to more learning. If learning is pleasurable & promotes curiosity & positive emotions, children are more likely to want to continue learning. Learning should be a lifelong journey

This is about improvement against narrow measures. Are these even the skills needed in the workplace (aspects such as creativity, collaboration, critical thinking etc may be more useful than knowledge recall as required in tests). The decline in pupil wellbeing over the last decade is shocking.

I think the issue here is that whilst the regime described in the article might work for many children, the increasingly severe education system supported by schools such as these has led to a system that is increasingly excluding autistic children and others who do not fit the required mold.
