The study provides a more nuanced understanding of when and how adult children’s involvement may ease parents’ adjustment. We argue that not all forms of help function in the same way and that assumptions about gendered patterns of support may warrant reconsideration.

Widowhood is often accompanied by declining mental health, yet the role of adult children in shaping parents’ adjustment remains insufficiently understood. We use data from @share-eric.bsky.social to examine how different forms of adult-child support relate to depressive symptoms among the widowed.

The effect is strongest among lower-educated parents and increases with each additional upwardly mobile child. While emotional closeness and (financial) support matter for well-being overall, they do not fully explain this link.

Using data from SHARE @share-eric.bsky.social, our study examines how children’s educational mobility relates to their parents’ life satisfaction. Parents with upwardly mobile children report higher life satisfaction than those with non-mobile children.

We find that men have higher volunteering rates than women. However, a higher proportion of women express interest in volunteering. Higher informal care responsibilities among women partly explain gender inequalities in actual volunteering.

Text: Mindestlohn vs. Bürgergeld I Neue WSI-Studie zeigt: Arbeit lohnt sich. Durchschnittliches Einkommensplus im Monat für verschiedene Haushalte bei einem Job mit Mindestlohn gegenüber Bürgergeld. Die Grafik zeigt zum einen eine alleinstehende Person, die bei Vollzeit-Arbeit zum Mindestlohn ein monatliches Einkommensplus von 557 Euro hat. Eine alleinerziehende Person mit Kind hat ein Einkommensplus von 749 Euro gegenüber bloßem Bürgergeld-Bezug – und ein Ehepaar mit zwei Kindern, wovon eine Person Vollzeit arbeitet, verzeichnet ein monatliches Einkommensplus von 660 Euro. Does your parents’ education still shape your income later in life?

I analyzed older workers (50–65) in 8 European countries using SHARE data.

Findings: In conservative welfare regimes, family background still affects income. In social-democratic regimes, no such link was found.
