I've talked before about power struggles within hardening authoritarianism. Usually, regime supporters fight over using rule-of-law in crackdowns (with massive abuses, of course) vs. completely embracing extrajudicial methods. Here, we see the latter dominating. Which is very bad news going forward.

Another shutdown consequence: Democrats can’t visit ICE detention facilities Democratic lawmakers had been suing the Trump administration over their previous attempts to visit ICE facilities.

NEW: ICE says it no longer has to provide Congress access to detention facilities — thanks to the shutdown.

That requirement was part of the appropriations law that expired last month — and now operations are funded by Trump’s megabill.

This is a kind of propaganda against U.S. citizens. You know, it's psyops. My favorite part of Scott Bessent's response to Kristen Welker's question about why Trump didn't like the Canadian ad is when he said, "what was the purpose of [the ad] other than to sway public opinion," as if swaying public opinion is not precisely the reason why advertising exists.

But, wildly, monthly crime data is still coming out.
