We were in the @nytimes.com this week, and we are so thankful to writer Rachel Louise Snyder for bringing such attention and nuance to the everyday challenges of domestic abuse survivors and the agencies (like us) who seek to help them. nyti.ms/4mN1KLO

When we experience funding uncertainty the way we have this year, it means that our flexibility is all but gone. We have to send so much of our operating funds toward essential services that the "extras" we do, like our food pantry for survivors, are weakened.

Safe Voices served 2,744 survivors of domestic abuse, sex trafficking, and sexual exploitation last year, for a total of 14,512 individual contacts. This is our highest number ever, representing both a high level of need AND, importantly, a high number of survivors who believe in a better life. π

Something often lost in the conversations about federal funding cuts is the fact that nonprofits are often providing the only safety net a community has. We're doing the work that a government might otherwise do, but subsidized via our fundraising efforts. So we're already pretty darn efficient!
