I think it’s very important for there to be more stories where characters transition over the course of them as opposed to before or after the story. It’s not something that I see depicted enough and it’s something I want to do more of myself.

this isnt' entirely the reason, but I do genuinely think that the cultural Christianity that's absorbed and embraced even by non Christians in America (and places America influences) plays a part in this because of how it frames sex as only being good under VERY specific conditions, evil otherwise

Most writers and games journalists are secretly embarrassed about sex. They believe sex is only good in certain conditional settings, otherwise it’s bad. This is a very dangerous sex-negative position that results in some awkward handwringing about noncon in games and erasure of adult game dev

That is, unless the eroticism serves a higher purpose — it’s cinematic, it serves the narrative, it centers queer voices, a woman is expressing herself with it, etc. The erotic has become conditional and needs to be justified or explained

IMO this is a losing position that ends in censorship

The point in my OP is that studios — esp female-led studios — should not feel pressured to add fanservice to their games & female characters. But attacking gooner games & milking gamer tears over the censorship of fanservice left many with the belief that eroticism in the mainstream is innately bad.

I also feel like I was quick to make fun of the “vagina bones” stuff and only changed my feeling on the matter after talking to adult content creators and realizing the left was sort of pinkwashing for the institutional censorship we see today

But the fact that it's easy to cast opposition in a light that presents them all as "degenerate" perverts and therefore incentivises people to take warning voices less seriously is something worth examining. Sex workers have always been canaries in the coal mine for encroaching fascism and puritanism because "protecting the kids" is a slogan that is, on paper, impossible to oppose, but always ALWAYS is the start of a slippery slope of censorship that grows to include sexual liberation, queer existence, queer joy, and transparency in queer medical help.

My response continues:Banning content purely because it's obscene has always been a dangerous sentiment because noone has the same parameters of what's appropriate. Trans people just existing is obscene to some. That doesn't make them more morally correct when they bang their drums for trans representation to be eradicated. You bring up "rape simulator 3000" as evidence that we need limitations on NSFW media. Okay. So what did you say when Mouthwashing was banned, a game that explicitly depicted sexual assault in the context of male accountability, and moved thousands of people online? Is all art depicting anything unsavoury, no matter the intention, destined to be stripped from the internet? Are the SA victims who deal with their trauma and reclaim their bodies through SA roleplay worthy of shame and derision for not doing it in a sanitised way you approve of? Are you truly prepared to let your government, wherever you live, decide what is suitable for you to come across online? How far would you be willing to take that? Are governments allowed to disrupt BDSM forums? Are websites educating people about appropriate knifeplay or CNC set to be wiped off the face of the earth? Or have you, in a desire to cater your own online experience, become someone who arrogantly orders for the table without asking what everyone wants to eat?
