The European Space Agency's (ESA) Proba-2 satellite captured this ring from its viewpoint in space. Flying around Earth, the spacecraft witnessed the same solar eclipse no less than four times, including this perfect ring of fire at 11:31 Universal Time. The images were taken by the spacecraft's SWAP extreme ultraviolet imager, at a wavelength of 17.4 nanometres.

Spectacular image of the annular solar eclipse of Feb 17, taken by the ESA Proba-2 satellite (725 km alt), at 17.4 nm wavelength, using the SWAP extreme ultraviolet imager.
From earth, the eclipse was visible only from the Antarctic region.

A nebula showing a glowing pink and white cloud of gas and dust set against a dense, star-filled background. Dark, branching dust lanes cut through the bright central region.
The Trifid Nebula is a favourite of astronomers, and this image shows just why.
So named for the dust bands that trisect its glowing heart, the nebula is a rare combination of three nebula types, revealing the fury of freshly formed stars.

two color telescope images of jupiter. both show the great red spot, brown, tan, and white cloud bands, numerous festoons and white spots. the left image has a small orange disk just to the right of the limb. the disk is gone in the right but the great red spot has rotated for a better view. Taken with Meade 8" SCT with 2x Barlow and ZWO ASI662MC camera. Left image, the best 30% of 20,000 frames in a 3 min video were stacked in Aurostakkert and processed with Registax and Phtoshop. Right image, the best 30% of 12,000 frames in a 120 s video.
Cloudy last night so I had time to process more images from 2/3 when the seeing was good. The left shows Io about to disappear behind Jupiter while the Great Red Spot rotates into view. The right shows 13 minutes later. Still waiting for a perfect night of seeing! Details in ALT. #astrophotography

In 1882, a comet appeared as the Moon blocked out the Sun during a solar eclipse.
As the eclipse took place in Egypt, astronomers named it Tewfik after the local ruler who had offered them such gracious hospitality.

NGC 2238 or The Rosette Nebula (also known as Caldwell 49) is an H II region located near one end of a giant molecular cloud in the Monoceros region of the Milky Way Galaxy. The open cluster NGC 2244 (Caldwell 50) is closely associated with the nebulosity, the stars of the cluster having been formed from the nebula's matter.
The nebula has a shape reminiscent of a human skull, and is sometimes referred to as the "Skull Nebula". It is not to be confused with NGC 246, which is also nicknamed the "Skull Nebula".

This gorgeous starscape is a vista of the Lagoon Nebula. See the dark patches scattered all over it? They're huge, collapsing clouds of gas and dust that will soon give birth to clusters of young stars.

A wide, detailed view of the Orion Nebula showing swirling clouds of glowing gas and dust in soft blues, golds, purples, and reddish browns. At the center, a bright, misty core surrounds a cluster of young stars, while darker dust lanes cut through the luminous nebula. Scattered white stars dot the black background of space, giving depth and scale to the scene.
I took another shot at the Orion Nebula for the 2026 season, but this time I brought out my full astro rig rather than a smart scope. You can read more including my processing sets at my blog. Let me know how you'd improve this image!
