A presentation slide entitled "About the show". The text reads: Biology in Numbers is in part the brainchild of then SMB president Sandy Anderson, realized by Heiko Enderling (also as SMB president), and hosted by Parmvir Bahia. Created for math biologists to connect with each other, the wider scientific community and non-expert audiences.
Under the text is a picture of Parmvir and Heiko sitting at microphones in an office. To the right is a graphic of some headphones.
A slide with a montage of all podcast guests to-date. Under their headshots is a little graphic of a microphone and text reading:
Our guests have included members and non-members. Scientists from every career stage, nationality and background.
Weβve discussed articles, committees, subgroups, mentorship, industry and roles within the society.
This year we wrapped up S2 of Biology in Numbers for @smbmathbiology.bsky.social. I've loved hearing scientists talk passionately about #MathBio. Digging into the data to learn about the podcastβs reach, it seems so do many others.
So here is the podcast by the numbers, starting with an intro. 1/2

How Trump Killed Cancer Research
Attempting to eliminate funding for certain kinds of βwokeβ studies, the Trump administration erased hundreds of millions of dollars being used for cancer research.
What happens when you cancel hundreds of cancer research grants, halt trials, freeze funding, lay off thousands of employees at FDA, NIH, CDC?
You donβt just hurt science. You hurt the people - patients waiting for hope. This isnβt just politics. Itβs life or death for millions.

To put this into perspective, in almost 15 years since my postdoc, the best score I have received on an R01 is 8%. You will need a score of 1 - 5% to land a new grant this year, and likely for years to come. I hope you can pull it off, but this is an insane standard that only a lucky few will hit

Rasmus Jarlov on Twitter writes: "There is nothing to celebrate. Moving from average tariffs of less than 2% on trade between the USA and Europe to 15% under todayβs deal will inevitably lead to inflation. Almost everything will become more expensive in both Europe and the USA, and we will all be worse off. The economic illiteracy in the White House is doing serious damage to the West."
Stylish Skunk replies: "I have a feeling you have 0 idea what you're talking about.
In fact I know you do."
Rasmus Jarlov responds: "Of course. I am former minister of trade in Denmark and you are an anonymous Twitter profile. You probably know a lot more than me. For sure."
