MEM is pleased to announce the 2026 iteration of its biennial prize for the best dissertation on the medieval Middle East (roughly 500–1500 CE).

In an effort to recognize excellent doctoral research in the field, MEM will award this prize at our annual business meeting in November 2026.

The aim of the workshop is think about interactions between Muslim groups in early Islam not in terms of polemics and acts of violence, but rather in terms of day-to-day interactions and the institutions and organisational structures which facilitated or restricted such interactions.

I am pleased to announce the call for papers for a workshop Edmund Hayes and I are organising as part of the Embodied Imamate project: "The Social Dynamics of Communal Affiliation in Early Islam," to be held between 11–12 June 2026 at Leiden University.
