“Ally” Is Not Enough: When Signaling Protects Whiteness

I just realized something about white folx and their attachment to the word “ally.”

For many, “ally” is shorthand for “not racist.”

It’s how whiteness signals its values, how you prove to yourself and others that you’re a “good” white person.

Actually, could this craving be satisfied by some cocoa powder, peanut butter, and chocolate protein powder mixed into a bowl of oatmeal with the PB chips added? .... possibly?

Have I just talked myself around from cookies to oatmeal? Maybe. More research tomorrow.

I don't do much cooking w protein powders bc the whey ones I use tend to get weird when heated (they use stevia & maybe it's that? I don't actually know why) so I usually just use them for smoothies or to mix into cold things, but I'm open to increasing the protein if folks have ideas for round 3

Running has made my insulin extremely reactive, so I'm usually just looking for ways to slow all of my carbs down as much as possible -- gotta balance them with fats and fiber as much as I can. So we're starting from a pretty good place, but we've got some low-hanging fruit for the next round

A choc oatmeal cookie is honestly not a bad starting point. Sugar is the first thing to reduce, but we're 3/4 of the way to a gluten free cookie so the flour situation isn't too bad, we've already got reasonable fiber & we're already in on PB chips so we can sub PB for the butter without much issue

It's a lot of effort for something I know I'll just suddenly wake up and be done with one of these random days.

But that day isn't coming soon enough & I can't be eating this many cookies, especially trapped inside unable to run so I don't even have "something something carbs" as a justification

Well unfortunately the food my brain has latched onto and become obsessed with this month seems to be chocolate oatmeal cookies with peanut butter chips. So now I'm starting the process of Ship-of-Theseus-ing them into something that's healthy enough to eat them as often as I want them.

One thing that I think gets lost in some of this discourse is that we wrote the Stochastic Parrots paper in Sept-Oct of 2020 -- more than two years before ChatGPT was released and the AI hype really took off.

If you asked me today I’d say casual couch coops. As we enter recession, people are rediscovering the casual apartment hang. In 2 years I predict we’ll be dying for more casual couch coops. “Come over to play Mario Party” etc

I think the people positioned to fund games are really sleeping on how many people are struggling to make friends IRL after COVID.

A year ago if you’d asked me where to put money, it would have been IRL connector games (something like Pokémon go but smaller/with less infrastructure)
