Just an update—the picnic table area’s still open in Yerba Buena, the fence has an opening by the stone stage.

Also a fair amount of “hanging with friends and catching up but we just call it meetings because we are very srs professionals”

I’ve had years where I was pitching AA games for funding, freelance years where I met up with friends and past clients to see if they had current needs, lots of “coffee today is a job a year from now” meets, and a few “do I want to use your service?” meets where vendors were pitching their services

It's more just that there were years and years where my whole first quarter of the year was oriented around GDC so it feels REALLY WEIRD to not only not be going but to not really be feeling the way that I expected to about that.

That's not at all to yuck on anyone who's going and excited for it! I hope y'all have an awesome time and leave with tons of connections and inspiration!

And if you're someone I'd normally hang with, let's do a call and catch up later this month!

It's my first year not attending GDC since 2013 and I expected to be feeling a lot more FOMO about that. Maybe it's the distance now that I'm not based in SF, maybe it's because so many of my friends aren't going, or maybe it'll kick up next week, but I'm genuinely surprised at my lack of FOMO.

“Ally” Is Not Enough: When Signaling Protects Whiteness

I just realized something about white folx and their attachment to the word “ally.”

For many, “ally” is shorthand for “not racist.”

It’s how whiteness signals its values, how you prove to yourself and others that you’re a “good” white person.

Actually, could this craving be satisfied by some cocoa powder, peanut butter, and chocolate protein powder mixed into a bowl of oatmeal with the PB chips added? .... possibly?

Have I just talked myself around from cookies to oatmeal? Maybe. More research tomorrow.

I don't do much cooking w protein powders bc the whey ones I use tend to get weird when heated (they use stevia & maybe it's that? I don't actually know why) so I usually just use them for smoothies or to mix into cold things, but I'm open to increasing the protein if folks have ideas for round 3

Running has made my insulin extremely reactive, so I'm usually just looking for ways to slow all of my carbs down as much as possible -- gotta balance them with fats and fiber as much as I can. So we're starting from a pretty good place, but we've got some low-hanging fruit for the next round

A choc oatmeal cookie is honestly not a bad starting point. Sugar is the first thing to reduce, but we're 3/4 of the way to a gluten free cookie so the flour situation isn't too bad, we've already got reasonable fiber & we're already in on PB chips so we can sub PB for the butter without much issue

It's a lot of effort for something I know I'll just suddenly wake up and be done with one of these random days.

But that day isn't coming soon enough & I can't be eating this many cookies, especially trapped inside unable to run so I don't even have "something something carbs" as a justification

Well unfortunately the food my brain has latched onto and become obsessed with this month seems to be chocolate oatmeal cookies with peanut butter chips. So now I'm starting the process of Ship-of-Theseus-ing them into something that's healthy enough to eat them as often as I want them.
