I’m sorry to say it but there’s no getting around the fact everyone is going to have to get much more stubborn. No, I won’t rush. No, I won’t use that. No, I won’t buy that. No, I won’t compromise on that. Stubbornness is a muscle we have to work daily.

I guess I’m saying it’s really hard to say whether something has consciousness, but maybe your test shouldn’t decide every huckster with a cs degree has created life, esp in a field that has shown genuinely impressive success in creating agents to *fake* self-awareness for at least 60 years

Like in medical testing there are these concepts of sensitivity - how often you miss a real thing - and specificity - how often you say something is there that isn’t. The type of test you use is highly contextual, and also depends on how likely a thing is in the real world.

The trite reply to this is “quite well, thank you” or “It’s when a human being is conscious”. I actually think a wilfully ignorant answer guards us from grifts; we have little idea how it works, so little chance of correctly identifying it in non-humans, including that pet rock you just put a hat on
