Delighted with the #privacywashing through #PETs seminar last week at Dagstuhl org w/ @carmelatroncoso.bsky.social @emilianodc.com @strufe.bsky.social
We had excellent senior researchers. We were also fortunate that young researchers who will shape the field joined us.

We hope that large orgs that publish works (e.g., IEEE, ACM) that use nude datasets will vet them more responsibly and we hope to raise community awareness among researchers. Check out the link for additional considerations & recommendations! bit.ly/nude-datasets-misuse

We are systematically reviewing research papers in which researchers had access to nude images. We are still finalizing our analysis and also recognize that there are no great solutions or sufficient ethical guidelines right now.

Scraping nude images from social media platforms will result in collecting some that were nonconsensually created or uploaded. Scraping from adult content platforms (e.g., Pornhub, OnlyFans) is direct theft of labor and still constitutes IBSA.

While scraping data from the internet is common for other forms of ML research, the collection and distribution constitutes image-based sexual abuse, a category of technology-facilitated sexual violence that may lead to serious legal, mental health, employment, and reputation consequences.

Our ~tiny~ paper on ongoing work that Allison McDonald presented yesterday at the EvalEval workshop @ NeurIPS is out! Datasets containing nude images are often used in research but must be treated with greater sensitivity. We provide some considerations & recommendations. bit.ly/nude-datasets-misuse
