Agreed with 90% of the piece but doubts crept in with this passage. Not sure a regime can erode basic state and economic capacity with few consequences
These problems can destabilise a regime over time or generate civil conflict if succession is botched once the leader is gone

Hungary is not an Autarchic Sovereignist closed economy!
If they copy Orban then they are copying a vibe and empty slogans without any relation to reality

The Hu economic 'Nationalism' was fed by infinite subsidies from Brussels. There is nothing to replicate here outside sloganeering vibes
The economy in HU is in the shithole now precisely because its effectively the sole EU state not to receive the COVID recovery funds due to Orban being a thief

Thereโs no place for Ireland or Estonia or Palestine in how these people see the world.

Idk if itโs just being from a small country that was only part of someone elseโs empire, but the neo-realist framing that Russia gets a veto on any country other than Russia joining the EU because itโs a former imperial territory and โgreat powerโ dynamics must be respected is just revolting to me.

BTW, USR (Elena Lasconi's party) isn't necessary for the formation of the coalition government. The new government will probably be at least a bit better, and their entry is probably a part of a deal where PSD endorses Lasconi, but the deal still deprives voters a non-extremist alternative.

On the other hand, the far-right parties (AUR, SOS and POT) would be the only alternative to the grand pro-EU coalition government. I hope the new coalition government doesn't screw up.

I have long had zero patience with Americans who furiously post about how cool and fun a bloody leftist revolution would be, because that is the stupid shit you say when you donโt know very much about how those revolutions tend to go for people who arenโt rich and powerful

Tariffs were another area of policy continuity between Biden and Trump that were, on the whole, bad. I understand the rationale for some strategic things especially against China specifically, but it was definitely broader than that.
