On this day in 1914 Patrick O’Brian was born.

O'Brian is best is best known for writing the Aubrey-Maturin series, centred around the navy during the Napoleonic Wars. Experts of the era have been very impressed at O'Brian's research for the books.

Interestingly he tried to join the Royal Navy!

On this day in 1937 Jim Harrison was born.

Born the son of an agricultural agent, he wrote 24 short stories. His most famous was the trilogy 'Legends of the Fall' (adapted for film in 1994).

Harrison became blind in one eye during the farming accident as a boy.
