Waterhouse was born in a back to back house in Hunslet to a father who sold fruit and vegetables. After working several odd jobs he became a journalist and authors. He wrote stories about everyday life including 'Billy Lair' and 'Office Life'.

On this day in 1915 Margaret Millar was born.
She wrote 27 mystery and suspense novels, set almost entirely in her homeland of Canada. Millar won many awards and in 1983 the Mystery Writers of America awarded her the Grand Master Award for Lifetime Achievement.

He was one of the first 'meta fiction' authors writing books which parodied traditional story telling. One of his books called 'The Babysitter' featured the eponymous heroine travelling between alternate realities.
