As someone who’s played enough to be desensitized to Callisto Penal Mines: salute

I used to be like you. Building a city as a standard project is your BEST FRIEND. Stop letting the belief that standard projects are inefficient get in the way of the fact that there aren’t enough city cards.

In fairness, when I play this as a 4-player game (and even sometimes as a 2-player at home) I often lose because I am the doofus who insists on terraforming Mars rather than collecting victory points some other more efficient way

The moment, 11 generations into Terraforming Mars, when you realize you have only put one tile on the actual planet you are supposed to be actually terraforming

Considered that. Wanted to make sure the temporal dimension wasn’t lost but I think you might be right that that’s better.

Yep! Stories that can be written in this way aren’t uncommon. They are bad stories not in reporting but in conception. They are almost always stories that are written because they are assigned by editors.

I bet they thought the world was ending in the past too but it hasn’t yet so we may as well keep going

14 measles cases reported at El Paso ICE tent camp The latest outbreak comes after a spate of COVID-19 and tuberculosis cases were reported at Camp East Montana, which holds more than 3,000 immigrants.

1) Realize folks are on #Texas votes! But @repescobar.bsky.social confirmed 14 measles cases at El Paso ICE camp - an outbreak for the highly infectious disease, per the CDC. In addition to 3K people at camp, 'hundreds of El Pasoans employed there'

For years on my old blog I published the names of servicemembers who died in Iraq & Afghanistan. No other outlets were.

These are the first 4 Americans to die in the Iran War.
Capt. Cody A. Khork, 35
Sgt. 1st Class Noah L. Tietjens, 42
Sgt. 1st Class Nicole M. Amor, 39
Sgt. Declan J. Coady, 20

This strikes me as squarely a non problem. If someone you’ll never meet again thinks you’re an asshole because you’re an American, you’ll NEVER MEET THEM AGAIN who cares. If it’s someone you’re building a relationship with, guess what? They do, too! They’re incentivized to discard lazy assumptions!

Americans Stranded in the Middle East Aren’t Getting Help from the State Department β€œPlease do not rely on the U.S. government for assisted departure or evacuation,” a State department hotline said when NOTUS called Tuesday afternoon.

NEWS: Americans were told to evacuate the Middle East β€” but the State Dept is not helping them do it.

We called the State hotline. First thing you hear is an automated message: "Do not rely on the U.S. government for assisted departure or evacuation."

Panel 3 deserves to be the inspiration for a Matties Through Time series, with the Mattie leaning out of windows of various countries and eras, in the costume of various countries and eras, shouting the appropriate equivalent of "get bent asshole" in the argot of various countries and eras

You’re allowed to take that position. I can’t stop you. I think that analogy is fatally flawed for other reasons, namely the difference between β€œproducing a lot of good and also harm” and β€œproducing a lot of harm,” and also the frankly hegemonic role the NYT plays as an employer of writers.

Hurtado was a top-down decision from Bondi’s DOJ stripping immigration judges of authority to bond out detainees who had entered without inspection. So it’s not evidence that the problem is IJs; it’s evidence that this DOJ is successfully transforming imm courts via policy and structure.

This is correct but actually misses the category error here: the REASON they’re doing β€œThe New York Times supports” IS THE SAME REASON that Jamelle becomes conflated with the NYT. WRITERS ARE NOT THE PUBLICATION. PERIOD FULL STOP. Opinion pages aren’t news pages but WRITERS AREN’T THE PUBLICATION.

Reading this, again, you get the sense that someone at Anthropic knows how the intel community misleads by using definitions of words that are different than everyone else believes. And the people at OpenAI simply don't know or don't care about that.

There was a point last year when the following dialogue happened:

Me: β€œAs I say all the time, commitment to the bit is the highest virtue.”
My interlocutor, a warm acquaintance: β€œI have heard you say that. All the time.”

I had a few moments of self-criticism. But you know what? TAPS THE SIGN.

The fact that J Street is being used as an AIPAC proxy by efforts like this, while being tagged as β€œanti-Israel” by the Israeli government, is why we (the Jews) can’t have nice things but also why we (the Americans) can’t have nice things (like the Jews).
