Ooh this IS a fun question.

I feel like the answer has to be a book I HAVEN’T reread yet, because the second read is often the most rewarding for me. But one where I feel like I really missed stuff reading for plot. So, The Diamond Age?

Okay if you hate it or even if it leaves you cold please let me know β€” it’s just studded with sentences of beautiful insight about human relations which also feel true to the viewpoint characters in question, which I feel like is a Very Reader!Emily Thing

I am not a completist but in my experience even her minor works aren’t REALLY misses. Which, IDK that I can say that about any other novelist currently living??

And I bet money that you’ll enjoy Memory Called Empire and, if you enjoy it (given your proclivities), that you’ll be MOVED by Desolation Called Peace

GIRL (gn) FIX THAT

Terra Ignota is not space per se, and the first book is kind of chilly, but the ideas, and the way the prose works in allusions and language, and the most incredible sticking of a landing I’ve ever seen in a series, I SWEAR it is worth it

It’s a good evening to read a novel.

A postscript to this: I think that if, after the last 48 hours, you still see the AI industry as a monolith of boosterism, you are missing the plot. It’s not my world, and a lot of the boosterism from corporate folks in OTHER industries is BS, but it’s a community with very smart thoughtful people.

It was really nice to live in the 20th century for a while before it rolled over into the cyberpunk nineteenth.

Though actually, now that I think about it, I’m not sure I’ve ever given in to this impulse at non-US based speaking gigs. Which is a shame because I would love to update my resume to say β€œPUBLIC SPEAKING: bisexual panel sitting on three continents.”

The problem with AI having had All The Capital for the last few years is that ~anyone who could cogently explain to the public what is actually going on is currently NDAed.

ICE Activity in Trump 2.0 is Increasing Employment and Decreasing Full-Time School Enrollment for Teens in Mixed-Status Families | CLASP This report finds that heightened immigration enforcement is harming U.S.-born teenagers in mixed-status households today and setting them up for worse long-term outcomes.

New research from CLASP & Univ. of Colorado finds increased immigration enforcement is pushing U.S.-born teens in mixed-status families to work more & enroll in school full-time less. Enforcement policies don’t just affect immigrants; they reshape outcomes for American children.
