Particulate matter (PM) is the term used for a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets in the air. Some particles, such as dust, dirt or soot, are large enough to be seen with the naked eye. While others are so small they can only be seen by an electron microscope. The National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) specify the maximum of PM that can be present in the outdoor air. These regulations place limits on what industry can put in the air. The Clean Air Act requires EPA to set national air quality standards for particulate matter, as one of the six criteria pollutants considered harmful to public health and the environment. The law also requires EPA to periodically review the standards to ensure that they provide adequate health and environmental protection, and to update those standards as necessary. The EPA standards for air pollution are under threat by the Trump administration, in that they seek to abandon the agency’s core mission of protecting human health. PM10 (Coarse): Particles <10 \mu m$. These include dust, pollen, and mold. They generally settle in the nose and throat. PM2.5 (Fine): Particles < 2.5 \mu m$ (about 30 times smaller than a human hair). These are the primary health concerns because they can bypass the lungs' natural filters and enter the bloodstream. Scientific research has linked PM2.5 exposures to Alzheimer’s, cancer, cardiovascular disease and asthma. Sources – dust from construction sites, roads, emissions from gasoline, diesel, wood and oil (vehicles, stoves, etc.), wildfires, dust storms, etc. How to protect yourself – know your Air Quality Index for your community – You can check your communities daily air quality at airnow.gov/ Air quality alerts are listed as: 0–50 (Good): Little to no risk. 51–100 (Moderate): Risk for unusually sensitive individuals. 101–150 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups): Children and seniors should limit outdoor time. 151+ (Unhealthy/Hazardous): Everyone should avoid outdoor exertion
