Yep. His depictions of interpersonal relationships, once I got past his kid books, were enough to put me off speculative fiction for maybe 40 years.

My farmstand had them a few weeks ago, for the first time ever. I bought 4 boxes (3.75lbs). My pitter tool only mangled a few, and after making my grandmother's stewed cherry soup w/2 cups of them, I froze 4 cups for pie this winter.

Indeed. Yet the notion that you have stuff around that you can build meals around should be pretty basic. Of course, at one point in my life, that basic stuff might have been a few packets of cheap ramen and a few cans of tuna, as well as a loaf of bread and a jar of mayo.

When I was in school in the 60s, we had home ec and shop in jr hi. Cooking, baking, sewing, hammer skills, basic electricity, all with projects. Of course, girls had more home ec & boys more shop, but we were all exposed to everything.

I silently mock those recipes that start off in their beauty copy referring to "a few pantry staples". I guess I shouldn't. The young'uns apparently slept through Pantry 101.

I can't eat enough veggies for even a half-share CSA to be worth it for me. Fortunately, my favorite farm/farmstand offers a cut flower share, and I picked up the first bunch this afternoon.

For women of my age (now "a certain age"), there was *very* strong social conditioning not to brag about ourselves, which also meant not to accept others' framing of something we did as praiseworthy. As a result, I was never taught how to accept a compliment; 60 years on, I'm still clumsy about it.
