Octopath looks like a traditional RPG but the real sauce is figuring out how to snap its difficulty in half with the right combination of characters and abilities!

She has an ability that lets her collect money when entering a new area, based on how many steps you took and how high-level the prior area was. Pair that with passives that let you avoid and run from encounters easily, and you can rack up huge sums of cash and buy busted weapons very early on.

You can get a huge leg up with Tressa if you’re determined enough, just takes the right strats!

I started with Olberic the Warrior the first time I tried 1, bounced off it hard, then tried again with Cyrus the Scholar, and that was the run I ultimately completed.

For II I went with Hikari the Warrior. Honestly, Warrior is probably the way to go in both games for an easier start!

The apartment my wife and I lived at back in Oklahoma was literally a five-minute drive from the school where Nex was murdered. It wound up ultimately being the catalyst for us to move out of the state.

1 is a very slow burn with a ton of difficulty spikes. It’s still a game I wound up loving by the end but it was about 40 hours of pushing through before it really clicked with me. II is great from the word go, so you might start there unless you’re as stubborn as I am!

Oh shit I never played that version. Always got Dante. And I hadn’t played DMC at the time so I didn’t know who the fuck he was.

(I’ve barely made any progress with the actual story of the game but the first Paranormasight was fantastic and I expect they’ll crush it here too)

Gotta be real, booting up Paranormasight and being excited for another mind-bending visual novel, I did not expect to voluntary sink nearly two hours into just fucking around with the diving minigame, and yet here we are

Fuck the Labyrinth of Amala but also what an incredible dungeon

I dread the idea of replaying the Pitioss Ruins again but the actual experience of sleuthing out what the fuck to do over eight real hours of my real life created an exceptional, memorable experience for me like that time I ate six-alarm spicy wings and shit my guts out while sobbing and gagging

Ultimately the reason why Final Fantasy XVI is slightly worse than Final Fantasy XV is because it doesn't have its own equivalent bullshit dungeon like the Pitioss Ruins and no this is not a bit I feel this sincerely with my Pig Intuition

AFTER MY CHORES ARE DONE TODAY IT'S FINALLY TIME TO DIG INTO THAT HOT NEW HORROR GAME THAT EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT

And there's ANOTHER game with 0, I'm so fucking excited for that! Like, if you bounced off Octopath Traveler 1 but thought the core conceit was interesting, I'd strongly urge you to try out 2, because it's just a flat-out superior execution of basically every idea from the first game. It's so good.

The final battle in particular was just fucking excellent. As someone who has utterly immersed themselves in Team Asano's work over the past year, I think this might be the best final boss battle they've designed going all the way back to Bravely Default 1. It was so fucking good.

After about 70 hours, Octopath Traveler II is properly done and dusted, and it was a sublime experience. The stories were so much more compelling this go-around, the HD-2D presentation was nothing short of gorgeous, and the combat was as deliciously crunchy as ever. An absolute masterclass, I'd say.
