We had a request from Emilia from Gothenburg in Sweden, wanting a quokka and a quail in a story. My first instinct was write a tongue-twister with as many Q-words as possible, but it ended up being about a quagga and an old bookshop instead.

When fulfilling children's story requests I find it sometimes helps to channel a little Looney Tunes silliness.

Because it's children that request the animals in our stories, we often get little ones wanting animals having a fight. And sometimes, the animals having the fight live in different environments and are very different sizes. Kids are good at setting these challenges.

10.06.2025 16:43 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0A couple of years ago I illustrated a second book with the amazing Helen Griffiths, over in New Zealand. It's about a real-life local cat in Pukekura Park. The story has now been turned into a short film with local children reading the rhyme. It's rather lovely: www.youtube.com/watch?v=CM71...
