Washington, D.C., has a population roughly equivalent to Alaska's.
And it has zero senators. If D.C. had senators, the GOP megablil bill would have failed today.
Instead, Murkowski got carve-outs and money for Alaska, and then voted to subject DC to the bill

Shout out to all of the faculty and students who made it through this semester in particular. What a time to be teaching and learning in spaces that are directly under attack from people who benefited from having access to the same resources themselves.

Three Democratic congressional representatives from New Jersey had also attempted to visit the facility on Friday. In a social media post, one of them, Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman, wrote that the facility had opened without permission from the city.

You know why European countries are so quiet about the El Salvador situation? Because they started the normalisation of extraterritorial detention of migrants and asylum seekers, often without any due process. The UK’s Rwanda plan. Italy’s attempted plan with Albania. And some still want to do it.

Florida teacher loses job for calling student by preferred name
It’s the first known dismissal stemming from the conservative campaign to limit schools' recognition of transgender identity.
It finally happened. The first documented case of a public school teacher being fired for referring to a student by their chosen name, instead of their dead name, as required by a law signed by Ron DeSantis in 2023: www.washingtonpost.com/education/20...

Then in two columns of 3 rows, it lists 1-6 that says:
1. Supports & affirms the gender identity of trans youth
2. Consists of a step-by-step process with social changes (e.g., shifts in name, hair pronouns, clothes)
3. Includes possible physical interventions (e.g. hair removal, voice coaching, puberty blockers)
4. Has a regret rate of less than 2%. Compared to a regret rate of 14% for all surgeries.
5. Reduces anxiety, depression & risk of suicide in trans youth.
6. Provides better mental health outcomes when provided to teens versus adults.
At the bottom it says, "Gender Affirming Care Saves Kids' Lives!"

What Vance is doing here is ENORMOUS disinformation. International students at the undergrad level typically pay full tuition, which subsidizes tuition for American students on financial aid by keeping tuition costs lower. At the grad level, domestic students are harder to recruit!

I sincerely think that universities should suspend their productivity standards for scientists and ask them instead to hold town halls in schools, public libraries, museums, shopping malls, and anywhere else and communicate what is being lost with the collapse of the research ecosystem.

With Trump ramping up efforts to disappear people under the dubious pretext of "gang affiliation," Hannah Dreier’s gutting @propublica.org story from 2018 is a must-read.
It exposes how high schools, police, and ICE funneled students into detention and deportation over nothing more than a doodle.
