also, for the record: I don’t begrudge anyone who likes this record. same for people who don’t like the album. different strokes, different folks.

in the end, i get why there are people who like this album. there are some elements. but i also understand why this album isn’t gonna bang like others. for sports fans who are TS fans, this album is the equivalent of when your favorite team/player has a down year. go get em next time, champ.

my favorite part of the album are the first three songs (Ophelia and Opalite will find a way onto some playlists) & the three track run of ruin the friendship, actually romantic, and wish list.

i keep coming back to the thought that the album gets derailed by wood.

my least favorite part of the album is that she broke my cardinal rule of writing — the body text doesn’t support the headline.

as someone who writes, reads, and edits for a living, nothing irks me more than seeing a headline, reading a story, and being like “this doesn’t line up.”

if TS really wanted to write something timely, topical, and kinda crude, she would’ve written something about cal raleigh’s “big dumper” … smh, missed opportunity.

the first moment i heard cruel summer, i knew I finally found a song that would replace mean as my favorite TS song.

the moment i finished wood, i knew i had a least favorite TS song.

you can’t give me false god & guilty as sin and then expect me to co-sign wood. sorry, not sorry.

my favorite part of that thing was her anecdote about how she has notes app pages of concepts and unfinished lyrics that she writes randomly as it pops up. I’ve got one of those for BN Bears. sentences. concepts. ideas. few people have seen it. the circle of trust is a dot.

the best thing about the album rollout was the cinematic experience because I truly enjoy getting into the mind of an artist. i’ve always been fascinated by her writing process. the behind the scenes music video stuff took me back to the MTV Making The Video era. a golden age of television.

for weeks, a friend & I discussed the album rollout. and now that it’s out, i hit them with this and the lightbulb went off over our heads: “you know when a team has a top prospect who comes up but they’re not THAT good, so a team tries to hide him? that’s Taylor and the buildup to this album.”

my fave sports comp i’ve made is james harden because this album sounds like the equivalent of james harden realizing he can ditch the other aspects of his game to put the weight on scoring and still put up numbers/get paid. but not a lotta my TS friends are NBA folks. the ones who get it get it.
