i see people online are once again playing the game of "people who didn't support Kamala bc of Palestine are simultaneously not important enough to cater to, but also the load bearing pillar preventing Trump's election" which is, as always, centering pointless global tragedy on their own grudges

less pilots that look like disney, more pilots that look like catopolis

i'm not sayin' don't make something badass if you really want to and you're capable, just don't think "once i've done this, the success will come!" for every hazbin there's dozens of pilots that you've probably never heard of or seen. and they're cool, but, like, the algo just didn't carry them

if you're an animator who wants to make a career of it and you want to do it on Youtube, you have to SERIOUSLY lower your ambitions for what it will look like, how long each episode will be, and how frequently it will release. even if you collab. viewers need to lower expectations too, to be fair.

(And the only people who are making $300k a video on Youtube are like. Mr Beast and probably one of the Paul brothers.)

Frederator sunk themselves deep trying to produce TV-quality shows for Youtube that did not even remotely make the money back. A million or so views? That's great for an individual artist, a disaster for a proper studio and korean outsourced traditional animation. That's like $300k an ep right there

to add to this, you have to ask yourself whether it's truly worth it for these indie studios to be putting so much time and money into really nice looking pilots that only get around 150k views, maybe $350 in Youtube revenue, and a small handful of patrons.

You don’t really need a budget to do indie animation, the problem is “indie animation” has been reduced to bigger budget/studio works with insane frame-by-frame animation, a big crew/voice cast and a merch line instead of scrappy shit you make in a week by yourself or with some friends in Flash.

took forever but i finally got that initial batch of capsule reviews for the GOTY video done. now i gotta do at least 15 more before and a couple of additional sections before i can wrap this up

on the one hand, it's nice to see some long wishlist-sitters finally near a release (Lost & Found Co, Clockwork Ambrosia, Before I Go, to name a few); on the other, the wishlist just keeps growing and growing and growing and growing...

p much no such thing as a down month anymore, the only time i see release lulls are during Steam Holiday/Summer Sale events

i still think Mighty Social Lion is one of the best indie pop-rock albums of all time

absolutely. back in the day Frederator used to have an indie spotlight video they'd do every week that featured various indie shorts and shows (my own Deadly Space Action appeared in one episode). i think people would love a new Liquid Television

as an independent animator, I think it might be fun if Dropout licensed some of the awesome indie cartoons out there, like Deep Space Discounts, Bridge Kids, Ollie & Scoops, etc. Maybe a multi-series compilation show if licensing short-form cartoon content doesn't make as much sense logistically.

at the 30 minute mark now on the video, so there'll at least be a half hour put up on the Patreon tomorrow along with anything else I do today

like there have been times of people cultivating the community they keep, like if you're an asshole you will get asshole fans. but i used to be an asshole and my fans are nice, and rebecca sugar is super nice but SU brought in some real freaks. i guess at a certain size you can't control it

i somehow got a cool fandom but maybe that's just because i never found actual success. maybe if my shows had 500k+ views there'd be all sorts of shitheads in there

so whatever i got done of the GOTY video, i'll upload to the patreon on Monday before my medical procedure. nothing risky/dangerous or anything, but i will be recovering for a couple of days probably. then i'll start alternating GOTY work, commission work, and BSR #4 work as I've said I'd do before.
