So proud of our Great Lakes fellows with the @ijcs-journal.bsky.social and @glcommission.bsky.social and the GL Sea Grants hearing about their listening sessions with communities and Tribes around the region, hearing about needs for the IJC Science Plan. #IAGLR2025

Do you work on lakes globally? Check out what is, to my mind, the most complete global database of lakes (~6M) and associated attributes, newly published in WRR. Also the basis for SWOT lake data. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Since this is probably about to be relevant: a reminder that when you poll the general public, they estimate NASA to be between 10-30% of the federal budget. It's less than 1%. All that amazing science and technology and wonder is got for less than a penny on the dollar of your taxes.

Across the U.S., Sea Grant supports coastal, marine & Great Lakes communities through research, extension & education. It touches our lives in so many ways.

20 years ago, I arrived in DC to work on #science policy as a marine biologist & Knauss Fellow through the Maine Sea Grant under NOAA. /1

Coastal economies rely on NOAA, from Maine to Florida, Texas and Alaska – even if they don’t realize it NOAA’s work has kept fisheries from collapsing, helped coastal ecosystems survive extreme heat and battled invasive species, among many other tasks essential to coastal economies.

my chair, Dr Christine Keiner, just wrote an essay about that

I worry that the focus on NOAA's weather predicting value is ignoring the millions of other ways NOAA researchers enrich communities and local economies.

There are no oysters without NOAA. There are no blue crabs without NOAA. NOAA trains teachers. NOAA is the lifeblood of coastal communities.

How many times do you look at the temperature on your phone?

Most of those temperatures are from weather stations NOAA/NWS helps maintain…or they are a model interpolation from a model NOAA/NWS helped develop.

The radar data, satellite data, every single watch and warning…that’s NOAA/NWS.
