Lucie van Dam van Isselt's still-lifes are a great favourite of mine. She studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague from 1891 and from around this date began painting observational pictures with no frippery. This work is from about 1930.

'Through the Windscreen.' (1929) Gertrude Hermes was a printmaker and sculptor, who was one of the leading figures in the revival of wood engraving in the early 20thC. This work shows the night-time view of a tree-lined road lit up by the headlights of a car.

Yes more jars of Damson jam,crab apple butter and chutney than ever before. Will make apple leather soon...then the Medlars. So much early fruit hawthorn berries and acorns.

We've had a covid 'bombing' this year . 2025. Starting with Rooks now with the more musical Jackdoors. Havent seen the usual Buzzards gliding around ,may have had something to do with the crowds/murders

17 common spotted orchids delighted us, this our 5th year of
allowing the front lawn to naturalise. Soil - clay, bit of loam, slightly acid . Rattle ,Birds foot trefoil, Knapweeds, Black Mediks, Carrot , Yarrow etc. buzzing insects going about their business. Grasshoppers soon

A good time for these hopefully this year. Plenty in our garden
males and now females. Also hedge garlic is very prolific this year. They have also been enjoying the honesty flowers.

A Foxglove Monstrosa has self sown itself from wild seed and has revealed it's mysterious beauty.
