With lack of food, shelter, medicine, we MUST step up for this malnourished mom. Anything helps.

I'm 100% with Ryan on this (and not just because I was on the same trip)!! Anthropomorphizing can of course go too far, but I've seen over and over again in my outreach work that a little bit can really help people connect to nature more!

It has yellow eyes, a very sharp pointy beak, and a mottled gray-yellow-reddish back. The water surface is murky and covered in little green duckweed leaves.
For friendsofabracadaver on tumblr, a Least Bittern! Big thanks once again for the #Waymakers donation. The challenge is over for this year but I'll be wrapping up bird art for donors over the next couple weeks. Much appreciation to all of you who joined in!

(Depending on how far you're willing to travel, check out Sweet Bay Nursery. They're in Parrish, which is def worth the trip from Highlands Co but maybe not if you're further east and/or north. Lovely staff and good selection of natives.)
Screengrab of a book details page showing the cover of 'The Shorebird Guide' and listing details including the publisher and publishing date, number of pages, and product type. The dimensions section reads "9.0 x 6.0 x 1.1 inches | 35.4 pounds" (there is no way the book is actually this heavy).
it's time I finally step up my shorebird ID skills (I live by the beach afterall!) so I was looking at guides but oof I didn't realize the weight of shorebird knowledge 😅

Happy birthday, birthday buddy!
Yep, I'm a Florida scrub-jay researcher and this bird is in one of the populations I monitor!
4 bands seems like a lot but they hardly weigh anything (~1g total) compared to the bird's bodyweight (70-85g). The population is large & all individuals have unique combinations, so everyone needs a few!
they are an adorable menace!

best cellphone photo I’ve ever taken of a Florida scrub-jay and it's sitting on my truck 🙃

Photo of a very green seagrass aquarium exhibit. Some small fish are visible near the center of the image, most of them are silvery but two have some fun striping. There was a fish in this exhibit (but sadly not visible in this photo, it seemed to be shy) called the 'slippery dick wrasse'. I highly recommend looking them up, they look fun and their reproductive biology is super interesting!
For #VacationSundays no. 14 I met up with some friends for what turned out to be a jam-packed day! It was about to rain for a lot of the morning & the waves were rough so we chatted on the beach, then escaped the rain in a small local aquarium, grabbed lunch, and ended the day with some swimming!

"Despite its extreme population density, Gaza was mostly self-sufficient in vegetables and poultry, and met much of the population’s demand for olives, fruit and milk. But last month the UN reported that just 1.5% of its agricultural land now remains both accessible and undamaged."
