Photo of a sandy beach with land across the water. The sand is lightly littered with shells and small plant debris, and the turquoise water has a gently textured surface. The strip of land across the inlet has scattered palm trees on the left side, some cars and buildings visible, and some denser vegetation. The sky is blue and peppered with several types of clouds.

For #VacationSundays no. 7 (today) I was at the beach again! Met up with two friends at a state park I haven't visited before. We started on the ocean beach but the waves were intense so we relocated to the small inlet beach, which was perfect!

#VacationSundays no. 6 was last weekend, I was *actually* on vacation and forgot to post! I was in south Florida for a friend's 30th birthday weekend, we ate loads of good food, swam in our Airbnb's pool + the ocean, saw Shania Twain in concert, & wrapped up the weekend with a lovely Sunday brunch!

I've definitely used that in conversation but would probably use something like 'herbicide-treated' in writing

Birds are dinosaurs who shrugged off a couple apocalypses. Some eat bone marrow. Some drink nectar. They outswim fish in the sea. They smile politely at gravity’s demands. ‬

‪I am grateful to see them. I am grateful to feed them. I am grateful to know them.‬

Are you an early-career biologist or ecologist who would benefit from an invited seminar? Would you like to come to UMaine next fall or spring to give a talk? Leave a brief comment with some info about what you do. I'm co-hosting our seminar series again, and am filling out our rosters.

Whoops, forgot to post #VacationSundays no. 5 yesterday! Went for a run on a trail in the state park where I do a lot of my fieldwork. It was fun to experience this section of the park as a pedestrian instead of as a driver with things to do! I also wandered a little on a small trail near the river.

Gaza is starving Palestinians seeking food are being killed by the IDF. It's time for the entire world to say enough.

In the past when I sat down to write about Israel, I’ve had a moment where I take a deep breath and accept that, as a Jewish woman, it’s going to be difficult. This time, there was no such moment.

I wrote about the intentional starvation of Gaza by Israel/US, and the moral imperative to say enough:

Yesterday, Wilmer Chavarria, a Vermonter & US Citizen, was held and interrogated for hours in the Houston airport by CBP agents.

He's a school superintendent. So don’t try to tell us this is about removing violent criminals. This is how they use psychological terror to intimidate us into silence.

#VacationSundays no. 4 - a hike at a new preserve and some solo wingspan!

I enjoyed the hike but likely will restrict future visits to the very end of the dry season, I'm not a fan of trails so flooded I top my hiking boots! 😳

@drangelat.bsky.social came to visit, so of course I took her to meet 'my' jays! We couldn't help but laugh at the look of this juvenile who recently lost all their tail feathers (almost definitely in a close call with a predator).

So the plan for #VacationSundays no. 3 was to break out my tennis racket & mess around on the court in my complex this evening. But the sky is currently deep blue-gray from the storm rolling in so uhh tbd.

Someplace new might have to be some*thing* new for this week - I did start a new book today!

Yeah, it's quite the paradox that the people who understand AI aren't impressed by it. A real head scratcher.

Are you from one of these states? Then we need your help to save American science!

The Senate Appropriations Committee will be marking up the President's Budget Request for science on Wednesday. People have been saying the proposed cuts "decimated" US science, but that's wrong: they are apocalyptic

it's not doomerism to recognize that the Earth of my grandparents' day is gone and will not be coming back. we can still determine what the new Earth will be like.

what *is* doomerism is to argue that we are already doomed and there's nothing left to do but wait to die.
