I really dislike this sentiment re: AI impacts on education: If an assignment can be completed by AI then it is clearly just busy work; educators need to create better assignments.
Absolutely not true. Just because AI can do something too doesn't mean that doing it doesn't have pedagogical value.
A table showing 75% cuts to senior researchers, postpone, graduate students, undergraduates, teachers, and youth.
The administrationβs vision of science in America is that we do 75% less of it. That means more death, less progress, more ignorance, fewer experts, fewer educated people, all to make billionaires wealthier.
31.05.2025 18:25 β π 15 π 10 π¬ 0 π 0If you want to see the planned impact on science with the proposed National Science Foundation cuts, this table in particular demonstrates it most devastatingly. Going from 330,000 people to 90,000 people involved in NSF activities. #SaveNSF
From: nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/00-NSF...
NSF, NASA and NIH budgets per year, inflation adjusted from 2000-2025 along with the proposed cuts. NSF includes research component only. Massive cuts across all sectors, well below support spanning 25 years.
How bad will it be? Catastrophic.
Proposed cuts to #NSF, #NIH, and #NASA will set the US R&D landscape back 25 yrs+, cause economic and job loss now, and undermine innovations to come.
But, this is the WH's *proposed* budget.
Speak up now before it is too late.
(inflation adjusted $-s below)
screenshot from the NSF budget request to congress showing that the number of people involved in NSF activities will drop from 330,100 to 90,000.
The bottom line with the proposed cuts to NSF is to cut the number of working scientists and disappear opportunities to train new scientists.
This is a PROPOSED budget to Congress. Call your reps.
Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3

π§ͺ The head of NSF's computer science directorate, Greg Hager, just resigned.
"My ability to carry out my vision, to provide a voice for computing research, and to provide authentic leadership to the community are diminished to the point that I can have more impact outside NSF than within it."
Happy Birthday, #NSF. Thank you for all youβve done for promoting science and innovation for the betterment of society. #SaveNSF

09.05.2025 00:25 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Thinking about devastating cuts to NSF: US gov-funded science has been the engine upon which most of the tech wealth was generated. But the oligarchs (currently hoarding much of that $) think itβs their own brilliance & not the accident of standing close to the scientific engine that made them rich.
