Canada Wildfire was built to be the βin-betweenβ space, connecting wildfire science to practice, and helping practice shape science. We have been convening partners, supporting students and trainees, and translating research into usable learning for the people making decisions in real time.

Overall fire activity shifts and fire-fuel feedback effects under changing climates. (A) Shift ratios of annual area burned (AAB), annual number of fires (ANF) and annual maximum fire size (MFS) projected by static models and dynamic models with different forms of fire-fuel feedback across the country. (B) Percentage reductions (%, i.e., fire-fuel feedback effect size) of AAB, ANF and MFS projected by dynamic models relative to that of the static models. The results showed the weighted average over the 10 ecozones where the weights were calculated by the median observed AAB, ANF and MFS for the baseline period (1981β2010).
New paper in Global Ecology & Biogeography on the fireβfuel feedback effect in Canadian forests. By 2100, under extreme climate change scenarios, fire-fuel feedback could reduce annual area burned, # of fires & annual max fire size by 21%, 21% & 16%, respectively.

A tree cookie sawed off the top of a stump and laying on the ground. There is duff laying around the sample and disturbed soil where I had to dig out a bit of the stump. Red curved lines mark where the fire scars are located and the outermost curls are pairs from either side of an old catface.
For #FireScarFriday is a sample from WA state. A unique remnant with approx 12 scars! I added in red lines so you can see where the scars are. This piece was sawed off the top of a stump that was cut long ago. I love how the scars and pith were preserved but not much else haha! π²π₯β€οΈ
